I believe he is.

Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders and second-year coach demanded that reporters shouldn't call him by his first name before walking out of a SWAC Media Day event at the Sheraton-Birmingham on Tuesday.

"You don't call Nick Saban, 'Nick.' Don't call me Deion," Sanders told Nick Suss from the Clarion Ledger.

"If you call Nick (Saban), Nick, you'll get cussed out on the spot, so don't do that to me," Sanders later added. "Treat me like Nick."

Sanders, who went 4-3 in his first year as college coach, walked out after being referred to by his first name a second time.

I would argue Deion is famous and well known as Deion well before he became a coach.

Also, what do they call Nick? Coach Saban? I feel like most reporters call Jimbo, Jimbo at press conferences. I've never really cared.

I mean if he addressed it and they still did it, I don't see any issue with him telling them to frick off.

I've heard reporters call Coach Saban by his first name all the time.

I dont care either, but if Jimbo specifically asked to be called Coach Fisher, I wouldn't call him Jimbo.

First names are racist. I agree with Primetime.

IIRC, some reporter was lambasted when she called Nick Saban "Nick" before the national title game, so I see where Sanders is coming from.

But his persona is "Prime Time". He had like assistant high school coaching on his resume before he took the Jackson State job.

The uptick in recruiting talent and increased press that Jackson State is getting isn't because Coach Sanders - who is 4-3 as a Head Coach - is there. It is because Prime Time is there.

familiarity, once there, then a report can say the first name. I doubt that a brand new reporter calls any coach by the first name without doing a couple Coach xxx until a relationship is there.

Hear his point

However, when Coach Sanders was Preacher Sanders, I was not calling him Father, sorry.

A lot of these media members know these guys personally. I guess a personal choice whether the coach gets upset when it’s done in an interview setting but I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I remember a reporter referring to Rick Barnes as “Coach Barnes” in a media availability early in his tenure and he responded “how ya doing Writer Lewis?” Never heard him referred to as anything but Rick since.

I guess. Seems petty. Like when a doctor gets butthurt when you call them Mr or Mrs.

They're all grown-ups. Someone addresses you by your name, then answer. It's not derogatory. It's your damn name.

He's been addressed his entire public life as Deion, so to get all butthurt over it, is laughable.

Seems like he's pitching a bitch fit about nothing. If he wants to be called Coach Sanders, Mr. Prime Time, whatever, then kindly let reporters know and move on - no need to walk out of a press conference because someone calls you by your first name.

Also, telling reporters to treat him like Saban then promptly calling him "Nick" is really hypocritical.

How is it disrepectful for a reporter to call another adult by his first name? When coaches/players are talking to the media, they don't call them Mr.________. They respond by using their first names. If a football coach feels disrespected by being called by his first name, he's acting a little entitled IMO.
