New Arkansas AD very critical of coaching buyouts

“For someone the likes of Kevin Sumlin to get paid 100 percent of his contract, $10 million, I think that was a mistake,” Yurachek said. “I’m not at a Texas A&M. I know they’re in a conference and we compete with them and they’ll probably hold that against me for telling you that. But that’s a mistake in our industry. It’s not a sustainable model moving forward. You just look at the growth in the past 20 years, think 20 years from now.”
quote:
“We’ve got to get a handle on coach contracts and the buyouts,” Yurachek said. “To me, losing football games is being terminated with cause. The protection sometimes that coaches are provided within their contracts to me is ludicrous. I want to be a leader in this industry in how we write our coaches contracts moving forward so that there’s not 100 percent guaranteed protection for their contracts.”

Yuracek sounds like he's going to MAGA.

He's not wrong. Our last AD fricked us.

And hence why they had to hire an up-and-comer instead of an established name.
What this goober doesn't understand is coaches like Sumlin, Gus, Harbaugh and Jimbo have all the leverage.
You either pay to play, or hide behind virtue signaling that your program is too good to keep up.

Sounds like a wise businessman.
Can we trade Alleva for him?

Meh, Arky paid more to buyout Bert. Sumlin stuck around just long enough to get us Jimbo.
Sometimes things work out when you don't count your money when you are sitting at the table.

What competent coach would agree to a contract that states losing games voids the buyout?

He can say what he wants, he can be a driving force for change.
BUT, schools will pay what they want and agents will still scheme and create drama behind the scenes to get their clients sweet deals even though the client may not deserve it (AU/Malzhan) schools are going to pay the going rate.

The buyout backlash is coming. The agents are going to be the ones that complain the loudest. I don't think the coaches are that hung up on it. It's their agents. They want to get paid even when their client becomes an epic failure.

Easy solution. Dont write the contracts. No one held a gun to their head.
This is free market. If you want losing to be cause write it in the contract.
AD's crying over the contracts they negotiate and sign is funny. Everyone wants the next Nick Saban, but not the risk that comes with finding him.

Did Sumlin get 100% of his contract?
Bert didn't, don't get me wrong. He still got a shite load.

They've had all the leverage. I think he's suggesting it's time for schools to take some of that back.
All bubbles burst eventually.

Bitching about someone paying 10 million while ignoring your new employer just paid someone nearly 12 million to go away?

No he isn't.
Many athletic departments now make over $100 million in revenue a year with football driving that bus. A&M made almost $200 million last year in revenue. At those levels paying 5% of that to buyout Sumlin or $7.5 million a year to pay Jimbo is basically like investing in a quality property manager for a real estate empire.
What is happening is the gap between programs that can keep up and can't is widening, and within the Power 5 we are seeing the cracks between say the SEC and the PAC 12. But that will just mean more stratification, not smaller contracts.

He's not wrong about them being out of control, but no decent coach is going to go coach a program where losing a game gets you fired.
Football is a ZERO SUM GAME. Somebody HAS TO LOSE.

He's right. But typically it's been the mega rich boosters funding the ludicrous guaranteed contracts and buyouts.

Why are people so scared of no buyout? Saban was way ahead of the times on this one.

Maybe that's why the new employer hired him?
