Since the start of last season, UT has lost 45 players that could be on the roster: 39 transfers, two that retired for medical reasons, four that were let out of their National Letter of Intent.
The hype for Heupel is real,’’ Neuheisel told me in a one-on-one interview.I think he’s the coach of the year.
“Kirby Smart is going to get a lot of that attention because he deserves it. Because he has so many good players and you’ve got to remember, now, he got them all there. The recruiting job is part of the deal as well.
“But for Josh Heupel to come into the situation he found himself in and to deliver in the way he has delivered, not only wins and losses, but with the way the kids are playing and the way the fans have bought in, it is has been absolutely fun to watch the energy that has been at Neyland Stadium.
“The energy is back, the passion is back and he did it with a roster that had to be completely retooled in a very short period of time. So my hat’s off to him and the entire staff, and he’d get my vote for coach of the year in the SEC.’’

He's done a really good job but if they lost to UGA they will have gone 7-5 with the following wins
- Bowling Green (3-6, #144 Sagarin)
- Tennessee Tech (1AA)
- Missouri (4-5, #83)
- South Carolina (5-4, #66)
- Kentucky (6-3, #32)
- South Alabama (5-4, #126)
- Vanderbilt (2-7, #151)
He will and should get some votes, but assuming Georgia finishes the year 12-0 and continues pounding people, Kirby should be the SEC Coach of the Year.

I agree. He’s done a great job.

He’s done a great job, much better than I expected, and I think he has Tennessee going in the right direction; however, if past history shows us anything, I’d expect Kirby to win COY unless UGA completely falls apart down the stretch which seems unlikely given their remaining schedule. That said, I’d prob say Huepel too if it were up to me right now

I like Rick. I sometimes listen to Rick. But much of the time Rick is like a neighbor who's a nice guy but he just drones on-and-on about nothing and by the time you escape from listening to him you've gained nothing and lost time you could have been doing something else more productive and satisfying, like clipping your finger nails.

Sam Pittman getting the Hogs to 6-3 after the Chaggie Morris debacle is the winner.

Sounds right. To Neuheisel 6-6 would be a championship year.

There are a lot of possible scenarios.
If Georgia continues to dominate opponents and finishes undefeated, I think Kirby is the COTY.
If Tennessee upsets Georgia and wins out, they'll be 8-4. Heuphel would probably win COTY in such a case. However, if VOLS lose to the Dawgs, 7-5 probably won't cut it. Clearly, Heuphel has done a great job given the roster issues.
If Auburn wins out and upsets Alabama, Harsin will have a strong case for COTY too. However, if Auburn loses the Iron Bowl and finishes 8-4, that probably won't cut it either.
If the Rebs win out and finish 10-2, Kiffin will have a strong case for COTY as well. In such a case, Kiffin will have managed a depleted roster skillfully. I don't see Kiffin winning COTY if the Rebs split with the Aggies and State and finish 9-3 or lose both games and finish 8-4.
Although it is unlikely, if Arkansas wins out and closes the season with wins against a (then) ranked State team, two consecutive road wins against LSU and what would be a major upset of Alabama, and then beats Mizzou to close the season, there is no doubt Pittman would be COTY. Arkansas would probably be in the top 10-12 at that point.
Another unlikely but interesting scenario is South Carolina and Shane Beamer. If the Cocks close wiht four straight wins, which would include upsets of Florida, Auburn, and Clemson, they'll be 8-4 and Beamer will almost certainly be your COTY.
Don't count out Jimbo either. If the Ags win out, they'll be on a seven-game winning streak after dropping two straight conference games early in the season.
UK will probably win out and finish 9-3, but there are more compelling candidates out there than Stoops given UK's three-consecutive confrence losses, IMO.

Oklahoma is gonna get a good coach when Lincoln comes to lsu and we get another vols coaching search

Whether people agree with that pick or not Huepel has done a good job at UT this season.
If Georgia manages to win the title Kirby will probably get it, but Huepel has done great this season.

I’ll eat some crow here as I was so OUT on Josh and completely expected this to be a total disaster of a hire following all the mess with Proot and basically everyone transferring. IIRC I predicted VOLS would go 4-8 (1-7) this annum
He’s definitely going to have to recruit better to ever win anything of substance in this conference but I was way wrong about him as an elite offensive mind and as a head coach in general. He gets this rag tag bunch to play hard and they genuinely seem to love this goofy frick. Hopefully continuing to hammer tPortal will be Heupel’s quickest path to get VOLS back to respectability.
It’s pretty damn refreshing to watch VOLS score points in bunches like they have since Hooker took over, especially after 3 years of Pruitt chaining himself to Guarantano and then Butch’s dog shite “infallible system” which was the worst offense I’ve ever witnessed when it didn’t have Josh Dobbs back there to make it work

Lots of good candidates for SEC COTY. I agree Heupel could be in the discussion, but the same can be said for nearly half of the other SEC coaches.

If he finishes strong, he'd certainly have to be right up there.

With what Heupel inherited - he probably has done the best job in the country not just The SEC. I think Kirby should get it because winning matters most - but no one can deny the job this Tennessee staff has done when no one expected us to even go bowling. Not to mention - games like Mizzou and USCjr were "toss ups" and we blew the brakes off both of them and beat the "best UK team" in their own house. If he can stay competitive with UGA and win out after and go 7-5... that is one hell of a job

Right now it's Kirby Smart and I'm not sure how anybody can say otherwise. Let's re-evaluate at the end of the season though.

If Beamer or Pittman win 2 of the remaining 3 games they will win it. Beamer over Pitt if they both do.
