To me, you have to look at the general context with those two. Sure, Dye lacks a National Title... and Spurrier lacks the National titles compared to guys like Bryant and Saban..... but considering what both of those men inherited, built, and left behind, they both certainly rank up as two of the coaching greats in SEC history. No doubt.

Absolutely.

Wait. That was sarcasm, wasn't it?

In reality, considering how he brought Auburn up it is impressive.

It's either Jordan, "Tie" Dye or Dooley.

Paul Dietzel may not be considered an SEC coaching legend because he was only at LSU 7 years and had one magical year in 1958 (with homegrown talent).

he operated under the same rules as every other coach at the time, with unprecedented success. This is why is really not possible to compare coaches across eras and rule changes.

4 pages in and no mention of Mark Richt? Classy guy, but he's had UGA championship worthy several times, and fell flat. In 15 seasons, his biggest bowl win was over an eventual 5-loss FSU in the Sugar Bowl. In 2007, one poll had them finishing #2. UGA was the only SEC champion in the BCS era to not win a national title.

I loved Mark Richt, but I don't think anybody would have put him on the legend list.

I agree.

Our fans may not want to hear it but Richt was far better than dooley.

Even so, this Oklahoma team had gone undefeated the year before and was on a 31 game winning streak (and not having won it the previous year, finishing #2 to ND). I doubt the voters would have leap frogged them, even with a UK win over UT.

That is a good point. Probably woudn't have happened....then again, in 1939, during the week of the final vote:

"November 18 #1 Tennessee extended its shutout streak, beating Vanderbilt 13-0. Having outscored its opposition, 186-0, Tennessee had a record of 8-0-0, but fell to second in the poll that followed. #2 Texas A&M won at Rice 19-0, and was #1 in the next poll."

Tennessee was undefeated in the '38 season and finished #2 in the AP poll (much like Oklahoma had done in your scenario).

Going into November 18th of the 39 season, they were #1. They on the 18th,they won but dropped from #1 to #2. They were idle the following week and dropped from #2 to #4. The following week, they beat Kentucky and jumped back to #2. So, They went undefeated and unscored on during that season but dropped from #1 to #4, then back to #2 in three consecutive weeks...

Here is what propelled aTm over UT on the 18th. ATM beat Rice (who finished the season 1-9-1) 19-0. UT beat Vanderbilt (who finished the season 2-7-1) 13-0.

Crazy shite happed back in those days during the polls. Imagine going a whole season without being scored on (after going undefeated the prior season), and you drop from #1 to #4 without playing a game.

I was just about to say that. He did have 7 seasons with 10 or more wins, but that was over 24 years. Stoops is kind of the modern day equivalent of Dooley (except that Stoops is a dick).

1 national championship
4 national championship appearances
Undefeated season
4 BCS bowl game wins
9 BCS bowl game appearances
1st and only coach to play in and win in all 4 BCS bowls
9 conference titles in 17 years
6, 12+ win seasons in 17 years
11, 11+ win seasons in 17 years
13, 10+ win seasons in 17 years
2 heisman winners
2 heisman runner ups

I don't like the man much, but I have to give him props for his coaching which is great. All the talk of Stoops going downward after his one little 8-5 down year in 2014, has completely vanished. In one year he went from 8-5 back to 11-2, with a playoff appearance. He's also having his best recruiting class (so far) since 2010.

He'll finish as an all time top 10 coach if he wins another championship.

Not saying he wasn't good, just that he wasn't the unbeatable god that many claim him to be andwould be mediocre at best if he was coaching today.

I certainly hope (for your sake) that you're just trying to troll, because if you're not, the word "idiot" wouldn't begin to describe your stupidity.

OK, then yall need to give credit to Hallman for bringing in the talent that enabled DiNardo to get that 10 win season in 96.

This may be the dumbest thing I've ever read here. you must be a youngun. One of those who knows nothing past 2005 but believe you do. This is totally ignorant. EVERYBODY played with no schollie limits. UNLIKE your Bertman who piled up titles with the scholarship advantage of the lottery. Anyway,,,

Johnny Majors. Won some sec titles when it was much easier (6 conference games, avoided other powers) but could never win the national title. Was owned by inferior Bama teams.

Settled for ties too often

Good coach but I don't understand why he gets do much love

That is all this site is, just constant trolling. But all the other sites I used to frequent over the years are just dead now. Trolling trumps dead. But yeah, the average age here has to be 20.
