Ok,not quite sure what this has to do with having JTIII
as our backup.POINT IS,how in world did anybody think this guy could be an SEC Qb? Could they not determine this after his 1st summer camp?

Barnes couldn't make decisions quickly enough is what I was told.

Cox needed the RS year.

Stafford should've been the starter from the beginning the next year, but looked at his competition and though he could win the job just by being there. Didn't study the playbook or work on fundamentals. If he had had Murray or Fromm's work ethic at the beginning he'd be an SEC legend.

God that was such a disappointing season for Tennessee. We had played that great auburn team fairly well in 2004 with 2 freshman qb's rotating. We had a young 5 star running back, a kickass recruiting class. It was all going the right way, then for whatever reason randy sanders put up the most abysmal offense he had ever put together. He got shite canned. I have no idea how we beat LSU that year, that should have been our first 4-8 season. 2006 we hire cutcliff back at OC after ole miss's dumbasses fired him for some reason, make the sec championship the next year and lose a close game to the eventual national champs. During that offseason cutcliff takes the duke HC job. We still haven't recovered.

Auburn 2010. Take Cam off that team and they are barely bowl eligible. Cam was awesome, no doubt, but he was the whole offense.

I agree, but that's a "if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle" argument.

The better candidate would be Auburn's 2013 team.

Yeah, that's a fair point.

That was just a one man wrecking crew. It's a testament to how good he really was, but that just wasn't a good "team". It was a great player.

Though I know any team who wins the SEC title technically isn’t bad, what teams do y’all think were ones who overachieved in order to win an SEC Championship? I’ll nominate 2001 LSU, who lost two early games to Tennessee and Florida, and then was beaten at home by a mediocre Ole Miss team. However, the Tigers rallied, beat Auburn in the game postponed by 9/11, and pulled off arguably the biggest upset in SEC Championship Game history defeating #2 Tennessee in a rematch, as a result of losing starting QB Rohan Davey and despite starting RB LaBrandon Toefield during the game.

Georgia's 2005 SEC title was kind of surprising. At least to me it was.

The only thing that surprised me about that team was the 2 losses they had....Florida game, Shockley was injured and we had to go to JTIII at QB. And they just blew the AU game that year.

Regarding 1998 Tennessee, it seemed like every week during that season I'd look at the TV and see Tennessee down late in a game, and Peerless Price would have one good catch and run to win it.

@ Syracuse - 34-33 (down late)
Florida - 20-17 (UT led at halftime and was tied the entire 4th quarter...not down late)
Houston - 42-7 (not down late)
@ Auburn - 17-9 (led Auburn 17-0 and held AU to 3 fieldgoals...not down late)
@ Georgia - 22-3 (not down late)
Alabama - 35-18 (led Bama 21-9 going into the 4th...not down late)
@ USCe - 49-14 (not down late)
UAB - 37-13 (not down late)
Arkansas - 28-24 (down late)
Kentucky - 59-21 (not down late)
@ Vandy - 41-0 (not down late)
MSU (SECCG) - 24-14 (down late)
Florida State (NCG) - 23-16 (not down late)

You must not have watched much TV back in the day.

That is a fair point. I was just remembering that going into that season I was not expecting them to be good enough to win the conference. I'm glad they did of course.

The Alabama entry for this is 2014

Defensive Starters
DE - DJ Pettway (undrafted)
NT - AShawn Robinson (sophomore) (2nd round)
DE - Jonathan Allen (sophomore) (1st round)
WLB - Denzel Devall (undrafted)
ILB - Reggie Ragland (2nd round)
ILB - Trey DePriest (undrafted)
SLB - Xzavier Dickson (7th round)
FS - Nick Perry (undrafted)
SS - Landon Collins (2nd round)
CB - Cyrus Jones (1st year at CB) (2nd round)
CB - Eddie Jackson (on 1 leg) (4th round)

Least talented defense we've had since 2007. Basically 2 NFL players in the entire Back 7 (Ragland and Landon Collins) (Eddie Jackson of 2014 was a shadow of what he became). We had average linebackers, no pass rush and secondary who couldn't cover anybody.

And Blake Sims, who I love more than anyone in the history of Alabama football, was our quarterback. He was a running back with a strong arm.

That team should not have won the SEC in 2014. It's one of the best coaching jobs Saban (and Kiffin/Smart) have done.

Probably win 8-9 games without Cam. See 2009, 2011.

1999 Alabama is a hard one to top.

Sandwiched between two mediocre to BAD seasons.
Wasn't supposed to beat Spurrier in the Swamp
Wasn't possible to beat Spurrier twice
Had DuBose as a coach

In hindsight, Shockley had a great season. Going into that season, he had never started a game and had completed something like 43% of his passes throughout his career. He was definitely an unknown before the season started. By halftime of the opener against Boise, the questions were answered.

2001 LSU.
They had no business being in that game. Had already lost pretty bad to UT and lost their starting QB early in that game.
Had lost 3 SEC games which NEVER gets u to Atlanta. Saban, being the master, devised a gameplan to beat a team that was 3 times as talented. I was in the dome that night and said Saban is the best coach in football. It was the night he became legendary. Waiting on the MARTA train we were talking and I told my BIL, wow, what could he do at a place like Alabama.

U gotta also give a shout to 2010 Auburn. Without Cam they lose to State, LSU, Clemson,Kentucky and Alabama.

They are sneaking into the Independence Bowl.

I mean it has to be AU 2013. First year coach and QB with a team that had finished 3-9 the previous year. I'm not sure there can be another answer.

The SEC as a whole was really overrated that year. Teams like South Carolina, Auburn and LSU were ranked waaaaaay too high preseason and State and A&M benefitted greatly catching them early in the year and vaulting way too high up the rankings themselves.

UT was up 26-7 with 10 minutes left in the game. The first game was pretty much the Josh Reed vs Kelly Washington show.

Reed finished with 7 catches for 125 yards and a TD
Washington finished with 11 catches for 256 yards and a TD
