Though I know any team who wins the SEC title technically isn’t bad, what teams do y’all think were ones who overachieved in order to win an SEC Championship? I’ll nominate 2001 LSU, who lost two early games to Tennessee and Florida, and then was beaten at home by a mediocre Ole Miss team. However, the Tigers rallied, beat Auburn in the game postponed by 9/11, and pulled off arguably the biggest upset in SEC Championship Game history defeating #2 Tennessee in a rematch, despite losing starting QB Rohan Davey and starting RB LaBrandon Toefield during the game.

maybe, but Alabama was expected to win the SEC in 2015. Winning, regardless of how, wasn't them overachieving that year. Ole Miss not losing to Arkansas and winning the west would have been an overachievement

Georgia's 2005 SEC title was kind of surprising. At least to me it was.

They were picked to finish 3rd in the East that year, iirc. It was one of Richt's better coaching jobs.

1998 UT had a lucky horseshoe, had an upperclassmen team and watching the Arkie game will tell you all you need to know.

Still lost 3 games we were favored to win.

No excuse in dropping games to WVU and UF

Shockley didn't play against UF...if he plays we win easily. We almost won with Joe Tereshinski at QB/WR.

Yeah, that Sugar bowl against WVU was less than enjoyable from a Dawg fans perspective. WVU came out like a buzzsaw and we seemed to be half asleep.

The result in Atlanta was but that team was very good when Shockley was healthy.

JTIII was a good excuse for dropping any game. You could tell Richt/Bobo were scared to death to throw the football that game. Which made me completely question what they were doing the next year.

2001 LSU was proof that Saban is the real deal. LSU was awful 2 years prior to that.

Tennessee had a good team that year, and by the 4th quarter there was no doubt LSU was the better team. If that game had gone longer, LSU would have won by more.

Sure but WTF were doing with that kid as our 2nd team QB?

I've seen some bad QB's @ UGA,from Todd Williams to Grayson Lambert but can't remember anyone who was as unprepared for SEC competition as JTIII.

The only other QB on your roster was a freshman named Blake Barnes. JT3 was a junior.

They only finished the season undefeated and beat 6 ranked teams :(

Regarding 1998 Tennessee, it seemed like every week during that season I'd look at the TV and see Tennessee down late in a game, and Peerless Price would have one good catch and run to win it.

UGA was a top 10 team virtually all season in 2004... and they had DJ Shockley for his senior year. Not exactly coming out of nowhere.

Tennessee was something like #3 and Florida was #10 in preseason. Both teams returned their starting QB while UGA lost its 4 year starter.

Winning the East that year wasn't a total shock, but the expectations weren't near as high as they had been the previous 2 years.
