this. The call was fine; they made Burrow move and throw on the run under heavy pressure. Not many QBs are completing that pass.
Burrow doesn't have great physical tools. He just gets the job done. he keeps his cool and makes plays when his team needs them He has all the intangibles. He is a leader and his team follows him, as they should.

The question is - Why take that risk on 3rd and 17?
Seems like an unnecessary risk - especially if you are calling yourself DBU.
But Tom doesn’t want to have to justify taking such a gamble. And maybe their DBs aren’t up to their own hype.

It was a stupid play call.
Not really, they weren't getting much pressure without the blitz, and Burrow was still making the throws. There was no good call for Texas on that play, blitz was probably the best option they had to try to get to the QB before his receivers were 17 yards downfield.

Props to Joe. He won they game with that play. He misses the throw and they don’t get the ball back...
And as Coach O says, no way we stop them.
Hats off to a great play and a heck of a QB

It sounded to me like Herman was saying they dialed up a blitz which impacted the qb and he still made the throw, not that he called it a fluke.
Yeah, that's my interpretation as well.
Still, nothing in Herman's answers really speaks at all to the coverage issues Texas had. Blitz or no blitz, Burrow was lighting up their pass coverage.
To be fair, though, I'm going off the snippets the OP provided and not hearing the entirety of Herman's comments.

I’d love to punch Tom Hermann in the face. He’s the ultimate douchebag

That is right... it was a bad arse throw.

Today I learned that Tom Herman doesn't understand what Monday morning quarterbacking means.
He meant don't tell your subscribers that Monday morning quarterbacking (which is basically what he's doing by questioning the coach) is easy.
In other words, that your job as a journalist is easy.

It's time to get over the beat down you took from Herman, brah

His poor game management at the beginning of the game, 2 goal line failures, and the end of the 1st half defeated his squad.

Bringing 1-2 extra pass rusher(s) isn't necessarily a high risk call on 3rd & 17. Unless LSU is relying on yards after catch their WRs have to run 17-yard+ routes which could give you time to get pressure on Burrow and make him scramble. Texas succeed in doing that. Not really a bad idea, since the DBs were having trouble with LSUs WRs. It almost worked. Burrow just made a great play, and so did the WR who evaded the tackle. Herman & Co made dumber decisions than that in the red zone early in the game that did cost Texas some points.

Yup.
You have one choice against these types of offenses.. create mistakes & turnovers via pressure. Sit back on your heels in zone & your fricked.
Live by the sword die by the sword, play aggressive, throw your best punch & make them earn it. Joe Burrow won the game on that 3 & 17 and earned it.

He’s always so defensive. He won’t last at a big program long term, he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and is better than those around him. Guys like that don’t succeed in the long run in businesses that involve other humans.

What a load of crap. Burrow made a hell of a throw it was no fluke. Come on you lying SOB.
Lol he didn't call it a fluke. When did he call it a fluke?
Wasn't Herman extraordinarily complimentary of Burrow? Said he recruited him and then talked with him immediately after the final whistle to congratulate him for such a memorable performance?
Damn, y'all some salty motherfrickers for a team that won

I watched the press conference. I don’t think Coach Herman could have been more complimentary about Burrow. Of course Herman wanted to win but he sounded proud and happy for Burrow.

I agree. I think Herman is an oily car salesman coach but he was very complimentary of Burrow.

If I was to question Texas game blitz on 3 and 17 doesn't make top 100

Isn't it bad enough vodka herman kisses his own players that he now is going for opposing players?
