Is there a recruiting base in Missouri that I'm unaware of?

To be a sleeping giant in football you have to have been a giant in football at some point in time. Missouri has never been a giant in football.

Not true. Sleeping giant implies that you have all the potential for real success, but have yet to align all of the factors needed to win a championship.

Don't forget that we went undefeated in 1960 and still don't have a championship to show due to a cheating Kansas football team. We also were ranked number 1 in '07 heading into the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma, but we shite the bed and ended the season 12-2 (bowl game included).

And we owned Bear Bryant's Alabama in the 60s and 70s.

We have the chemistry to be a stellar team. We just haven't put all of the pieces together yet. We've been close, but no cigar.

Sleeping giant.

Never. Gotta have copious amounts of in state talent without the ability to currently recruit it to be considered a sleeping giant

For the record, it was none other than Tom Osborne who actually said this.

Also for the record, we cannot verify whether or not he was high at the time he said this.

Its clear Mizzou's Yankee presence in the SEC has rustled your jimmies thoroughly.

The answer is very.

As in, you sound very fricking retarded

Do you realize that it was said by a prominent coach and AD in college football?

Tom Osborne has very good reason to say it, and sober not high.

Nebraska built a program in a state with maybe 2 D1 athletes a year, in a fricking cold arse corn field, in a shitty state that is far away from any solid recruiting area.

MO has 9 times the in state talent, 2 major urban areas, 2 large markets, closer to TX. Its really no wonder the old man thinks we're a sleeping giant.

Tom Osborne famously called Mizzou "a sleeping giant" because of the talent within its own borders. Stated at this link: he done said it
Seen it uttered elsewhere. He said it in the 1980s or 90s and I don't know where the original quote is online but you people wanted a link so there's a link.

And in some ways Osborne had reason to say it, as part of what fueled his dominant Nebraska football teams of the mid-1990s - not all, but part of it mind you - was a pipeline he built into Missouri for recruiting. Grant Wistrom, Chris Brooks etc were starters and later NFL players on those national champion Husker teams who were recruited out of Missouri. The city of Webb City, Missouri, which had a streak of multiple state titles, was notoriously known in our parts for its "Webb City Huskers" booster groups or as "Red City" if you will, because of the pipeline it had of players going off to play for Osborne.

By who?

I have respect for Mizzou. I know they went through a rough patch in the mid 80's to mid 90's but traditionally Missouri puts good teams on the field. But a potential college football giant? I just can't see it. The main thing is Missouri doesn't produce a ton of D-1 talent. Unless Missouri has a billionaire alum that will sink money into the program I don't think it can happen. Produce a Phil Knight type who is buying players for Oregon then you might have a chance.

Now I do think your a sleeping giant in basketball. Missouri has been right on the edge a bunch of times but has never put it together.
