All in all, the guy is pretty solid.
The script has flipped a little too far on the Hurts dialogue. He started off hot and probably got too much praise and then struggled late and now people think he is a bum.
Fact of the matter is he was a true freshman who played really well at times and pretty poorly at other times just like pretty much all true freshmen (of course most true freshman QBs are sitting on the bench learning and maturing not starting, much less starting for a team in the SECCG and then two playoff games).
I think a lot of people are writing him off too early based on a couple of rough games against Washington and Clemson.

Guy won player of the year as an 18 year old playing in the best defensive conference in CFB.
But sure Al, he probably won't even sniff the NFL.

And if he doesn't develop a consistent intermediate and long passing game, we'll lose again.
Bama went 14-1, won the SEC, and lost the NC by 4pts on the last second to a great team.
Hurts completed 60+% of his passes and ran for 950yds.
What planet am I living on where that's not "pretty solid" as a true frosh? Put his numbers up against Eason, Fitzgerald, and Allen and tell me what you think

Hurts is the only QB on that list that wont sniff the NFL
His NFL career will mimic that of the guy who compiled the list. They will say he is a better and more polished QB than Cam Newton.

Hurts won SEC player of the year and SEC freshman of year. Why wouldn't he be top 5?

Because Alabama lost to Clemson.

Jalen Hurts is #2 which is embarrassing enough but whatever his name is from Miss St. is #1.
Neither one of those guys can throw worth a damn. What is the deal with QBs in the SEC?
Oh hey, lookit ... you forgot to include the entire list.
Not a problem ...

Merlinz.......the qb god of the universe

Hurts completed 60+% of his passes
A whole lot of those yards, perhaps most, were shovel passes to an end around (jet sweeps) and screen passes at or behind the line of scrimmage. We had an elite wide receiving corps and they were pretty much wasted.
He completes just 30.7 percent of his passes while under pressure.
He completes just 33.3 percent of passes more than 20 yards down the field.
80 of his 227 completions were behind the line of scrimmage.

With Coker or Sims, we'd probably have had a passing game that Clemson would actually have had to defend, and probably won that game.

Now compare that to other recent true freshmen starters. If he doesn't progress, you might have an argument.

I don't give a flying leap about the other qbs. They didn't win a title either. I only care, anyway, about Alabama, and I personally think he cost us a title. Furthermore, I think St. Nick, as great as he is, made a couple of mistakes in putting all the eggs in Hurts' basket, and in not letting Kiffin call the title game. Kiffin schemed all year around Hurts' lack of a passing game. He might have been able to do one more game. Sark just didn't have time to prepare.
edit: but yeah. Hopefully Hurts will improve.

How does this compare to other QBs? I really need to see some context to form an opinion on this.

This is so dumb.

What would have been your move, coach?

and in not letting Kiffin call the title game.
This was mutual. And I know that you are going to say "if you think that was mutual, then you are dumb!!!"
but the only thing that we have to go by is what Saban and Kiffin said, which that it was a mutual agreement for the best.
If Kiffin had have coached and not fared any better, you would be bitching about how it was stupid to keep him after the putrid Washington and UF play-calling. Guaranteed.

So why didn't Kiffin "scheme around Hurts' lack of passing game" against UF and UW? This is also dumb.

Huddie is a notorious Hurts hater.
As noted, I don't care about the other qbs.
I don't hate Hurts. He just wasn't a very good qb this year and he cost us a title game. You will remember, no doubt, when I said back in the middle of the year that if he didn't develop a consistent intermediate to long passing game, it would eventually get us beat.
Lo, and it came to pass. Well, Lo and it came to the lack of a pass.

Good list no problem here

The one pass to TE Howard in the Championship game shows he can do it. It's as much the OC's fault Clemson got to run 100 plays in the game.
As much as we sucked on sustaining drives and killing clock we still got the go ahead TD with not much left on the clock. One mistake by Clemson and we win.
Clemson deserves to be the Championship Team. I give them all the credit. Still proud of my Tide. Hurts will get better or get passed. Either one means Bama gets better.

Who is McElroy and who cares what he thinks?

Hurts is garbage next question.

Those guys were 5th year seniors when they played for Bama. And I'd argue they still wouldn't have done much better.
eta: you keep talking about "I don't care about other qbs". This is a thread about the 5 best returning SEC qbs. If you want to start a thread about Jalen Hurts' limitations be my guest. I just was trying to point out he belongs in the discussion as one of the best returning SEC qbs.
