Imagine making millions, coaching in the SEC and still living a sane life

quote:

Have you ever seen Mark’s contract? Mark has the best fricking deal in the country.” An SEC assistant told me this when I asked about Stoops petering out on FSU, a job most of us would assume to be on par with Oklahoma, the program that made his brother Bob famous — and a national champion.

quote:

You have to think like a normal football coach, not a fan, and not Nick Saban.” None of this is about to sound particularly sexy, but such is the context of any Dad Logic: Lexington itself provides the secret recruiting enticement for any coach, and that’s quality of life. “Look man, Lexington is a really nice town. It’s big but still small, it’s got nice houses, and there’s horse racing and the Bourbon Trail and all that. You’re a few hours from Nashville and Louisville and Cincinnati. You get four seasons, good schools for your kids and it’s not the middle of nowhere.”

I agree he was smart to stay in Lexington if his life ambition is to be a multi-millionaire, have a great, balanced life, live in a great city, etc, but never be considered among the best in history at his trade. He's like a Gary Patterson, Brent Venables, or Bud Foster. Those types of guys are smart enough to put their egos aside to be happy and content. 99% of the types of people who ever get even above average at coaching football are the types whose egos are so big that they have to take a chance at coaching at an Alabama, FSU, Ohio State, etc. Modern tv money also allows good coaches to stay at average schools and make great money also.

Can't disagree with any of that. I would move back to Lexington in a heartbeat. Fantastic place to live.

Plus UK is investing more in the football program than they have in decades. Stoops has a great place to live and raise his family, top notch brand new facilities, Ohio recruiting in his backyard, and all the while Cal takes all the heat from the local media and nutjob fans.

I'd rather coach at USF personally. Same level of possible success and you get a beach. Win win.

I know this is a hot take, but I kind of think he’s one of the most overrated coaches in College Football. Obviously Kentucky is a very hard place to win, but he’s had one season with more than 8 wins and we treat him like a top 15 coach in the Nation.

While Lexington is great, this quote could be edited and plugged with other cities and could then easily apply to five other SEC programs that are great college towns located close to similar cities. Some can offer the mountains, lakes or beaches. It's not unique to Stoops or Kentucky.

He's done an overall great job. He took his time, which was needed, and we are seeing the benefits of it now.

It's just a shame that covid is going to wreck what was going to be a special season.

I kind of agree with the premise. Not every coach needs to be at a huge program to be successful and happy. You still get paid a lot, pressure is some but not a ton, and also a good community.

Guys like Patterson, Bill snyder, Etc. Can still be successful and make a ton of bank at a slightly smaller program.

He wins 7-10 games a year at Kentucky. Paid good money. Fans are happy. He is happy. Nothing wrong with that. To some people job security and not moving your family all over the place is more important than championships

Which schools also have a bourbon trail and are the epicenter of horse racing? Not arguing here. Just trying to educate myself on the bourbon game.

Mountains > beach, and this Florida heat gets fricking old after awhile.

I get it that Kentucky has those two things which are unique to Kentucky. I just find it hard to believe horse racing or the bourbon trail are reasons for Stoops to never leave Kentucky, or that those two and other factors make Kentucky even a top five job in the conference, much less "the best job in college football" as the title states.

Problem then becomes, new ad, fan unrest, asked to fire assistants even after a decent season, unrest grows, and now you have ruined your chance for major career advancement.

I laugh every year when a coach who has done a great job gets fired, Bower in the good days at USM, Petrino at Arkansas/ Louisville(but he had his own problems) but it's hard for those schools to do better, Texas Tech with Leach, a bunch of group of 5 schools fire decent coaches every year. A national title is not even in the picture for most of these schools, but fans get delirious.

Well...when you're an above average coach at an institution with low expectations, you are pretty much guaranteed a position for life if you continue to average 7 or 8 wins in the regular season.
