What benefit/return on investment does the average donor get for donating to a new workout facility? New locker room? New nutrition center?

They’re not donating big money every year for those things. NIL payrolls would require exactly that. It’s not the same.

As long as FatCats sit in box seats and have free drinks and free food that they don’t have to stand in line for, and restrooms that are clean and no one will pee on your feet there will be a large amount of money funneled to the school of choice.
It’s what rich fans do.

Something tells me that wasn't in the script given to the kid by whoever told him to do that. I can just imagine that kid frozen not knowing what to say or do

this isn’t a market driven by standard rules of economics.

What exactly is the return on investment? At the end of every year boosters from only one team can argue they got the return they were looking for.

I think soon you'll be seeing incentives written in. Milestone stats. Only way to keep play making high for many of the now spoiled kids.

It may take a few years for programs to know that a 4 star Safety/athlete is going to be offered so much in NIL before taking into consideration all sorts of other stuff like marketability, projected time for development. Also certain middle men will emerge that will be slightly more trustworthy than others. If you are dealing with one of those guys as opposed to Uncle Boo who walks in with a pimp hat, you are going to trust the former a bit more.

He would have been able to wear #5 in the NFL today too, and backs like him who were as involved in the passing game as he was are more valuable in today's game as well. At the end of the day he did well for himself but some part of him must feel like he was born too early

By definition it’s not allowed to be performance based. That would be “pay for play”. You’re supposed to just pay players for how marketable they are. Doing commercials, signing autographs etc.

…and that lasted for all of 30 minutes before it just became pay for play

If I’m a fat cat booster, I’m telling these kids, “You want my money, I’ll pay at the end of the year. You have to play every game, including the bowl or you get nothing. “

but that probably goes against SCOTUS's ruling.

Except SCOTUS made no ruling on NIL yet.

This market is going to correct itself quickly.

Maybe. Or will it become an excuse for schools to use when they have down years saying they need more NIL money to compete?

I would hope people would spend their money wiser but yet we live in a world where influencers are paid millions to post tik toks. I can see a world where donors keep throwing money so they can feel like an actual GM for their school.

Gonna be a lot of false hype and clout from these players to raise their marketability and NIL value, all while being an average college athlete.

Who doesn’t care? Few people get rich by being stupid. People are throwing money now because it’s the hot thing to do and they can to help their school win. It’s not going to take long for a lot of people to realize this is wasting money and these kids they are paying aren’t panning out nor are good representations of their money.

These people are already donating to the university and getting tax write offs. I’ve seen some collectives offering the same deal, so they’ll just move their money to a different donation. Instead of donating to the universities general fund, it’ll be directly to NIL

It'll work itself out eventually. Those that are wanting to hold out for $X or enter the transfer portal etc. are going to start finding themselves with nowhere to go; or at least nowhere they'd want to be once coaches start filling their rosters with new recruits out of high school and other portal players. A lot of these kids are going to start finding out real quick the grass isn't always greener especially when they're left out in the cold with nowhere to go but a G5 or mid-low tier P5 school with a roster opening.
