Reports have been going for the entirety of the Kiffin-to-Auburn saga about an unnamed coach monitoring the situation with eyes on the Ole Miss football job. Tuesday night, that coach was revealed to be Luke Fickell of Cincinnati.

Lane Kiffin = 0 CFP appearances

Fickell = 1 CFP appearance

Fickell would be a massive upgrade.

1. Fickell wants to stay in the Midwest.

2. Ole Miss is not a drastically better job but does have a much harder path to a conference championship and playoff.

Fickell can’t beat Pittman either so it’s a great fit

I get the feeling Fickell is holding out for whenever OSU becomes open again.

Would be a home run hire - but no idea on how likely it is. We'd need to at least make him say no.

It's good to know we'll have a capable backup if Lane doesn't work out in the next couple of years. Hang onto him for us.

Would be easier to sell the Fickle pipe dream if Rhule, Freeze, and Norvell weren’t 3 of the other 4 listed.

Ole Miss will hire a good coach, all hires are, but it won’t be one of those four.

That would be a home run.

I think Kiffin would do well at Auburn, but that doesn't fix the Lane problems. And he shares some of those same problems with Riley.

Regardless, it would be an upgrade for Auburn. But it would be an upgrade for Ole Miss, as well. The question is... would he?

I genuinely don't know why Auburn didn't go after Fickell. Personally believe Fickell is a better coach. Actually believe Freeze is a better coach, but there's no way he's coming back to Ole Miss.

Fickell can use the OM job as a stepping stone to a bigger job like OSU, like other coaches before him.

Simple Question, and I don't know the answer. How many of all these coaches that are going to be rumored for the Auburn job, the Ole Miss Job, if Lane leaves, etc, etc, are Jimmy Sexton clients?

Jimmy Sexton is the perpetual Christmas Gift for lots of coaches, he gets people lots of money and schools in crazy contracts with coaches who are not worth it.

He doesn't need to, Fickell can get a tier 1 job right now.

Ole Miss is a clear tier 2 job, no slight to the Rebs, it just is what it is.

Unless Ole Miss finds a Gary Patterson type coach, that's the way it's going to be. And you see what happened to Patterson.

As the saying goes, there are only two types of coaches: those that are fired and those that will be fired.

Lane, should he go to Auburn, will eventually be fired (if he stays longer than 3-4 years). Just the way of the world. One thing is for sure, he's not going to retire at Auburn.

Suspect he's waiting on a NFL position. I doubt he wants to follow Saban, and he's alluded to that fact.
