They made a rule after three players were rumored to be coming to LSU. AFTER, NOT BEFORE. All of the SEC teams have used players in some sport that can be considered "professional'.
Everyone of the schools, and Greg Sankey included, trying to pin this all on LSU and now take a stand can kick rocks.

The SEC can make whatever bylaws they want BUT those bylaws can be overturned in a court of law.
The SEC members can vote 16-0 that players do not have to pay state income taxes on their NIL money. But a state is still going to collect those taxes.
Courts supersede the SEC at every level.

There were two votes.
One was held on whether to enact the actual rule prohibiting former pro players. It passed 16-0. LSU voted in favor.
The second vote was on what the penalties would be for breaking the rule. It passed 15-0. LSU president Rousse abstained.
That makes me think that Rousse knew that LSU was going to break the rule.

The members of the SEC will fight this to the end not just because of the impact on sports, but because it sets the precedent that a local out of state judge can rule on who universities can admit as students. It threatens the foundation of the entire university, not just their athletic programs.

Buddy, LSU's not on our schedule. I'm not worried the least bit about LSU. The NIL and transfer portal are ruining the sport that I have loved since I was a kid, and Kiffin/LSU are taking steps to accelerate that ruin. I couldn't give a rat's arse about LSU. It's what LSU and Kiffin are doing to CFB that I care about.

Do you think the SEC is going to add Missouri to the federal suit? I believe a Missouri court ruled that Missouri had to admit and roster a player that is otherwise ineligible under current NCAA rules.

If you read the suit LSU told Wright and Harris they were terminating their agreements due to the SEC rules so the judge added LSU to the lawsuit meaning the players currently have a court order AGAINST LSU. Legally LSU has followed the SEC rules and done what they are supposed to due. The media has just done a very poor job of covering that.
