There are a lot of casual Saints fans across the state and obviously it makes sense for the Saints to have more fans in New Orleans, but there is a reason that Tiger Stadium is the 6th largest stadium in the world.

And there are a shitload of LSU fans in and around the New Orleans area. The largest attendances ever in the Superdome were for LSU Sugar Bowls and National Championships. And many people don't know this, but LSU still has 3 of the top 4 largest regular-season NCAA basketball attendances of all time for games played at the Dome in New Orleans in the late 80s and 90s. All were over 60,000 and they held the record for the largest basketball attendance ever (college or pro) for a long time. LSU has been around a lot longer than the Saints and it runs pretty deep. The Saints have a ton of fans too. Many are fans of both.

I disagree about Louisiana.

Nobody was talking about the Saints/Falcons and everyone was talking about LSU's Defensive performance against the aggies.

They aren't. Not by a long shot.

Shouldn't that red state in SE U.S. be orange and blue now?

Believe it or not Louisiana is much more than New Orleans

New Orleans Metro makes up over a quarter of Louisiana's population.

Not to mention that Tulane, while not as successful in athletics, is just as big a school as LSU. Surely they pull some of the potential college fans away.

Another thing to keep in mind is that people who didn't grow up in Louisiana or go to school at LSU are unlikely to adopt them as their team. NFL teams get picked up when people move to those areas.

call BS on that. LSU is King in Louisiana. Saints are popular, but second tier to LSU

Among white folks this is definitely true statewide. I'm thinking black folks love the Saints more and by a much bigger margin.

Oklahoma State is a formidable contender though.

What tv ratings? Are you looking at ratings specifically in Louisiana? Across the Gulf South? There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

Oregon is bigger than the Blazers from what I can tell.

Well, Portland is the biggest metro in the state by far -- about 2/3 of the state population. You have a lot of non-natives like me. And of those who care about Oregon & Oregon State, it's probably about a 60/40 split in favor of the Ducks.

The Blazers are the longest running major sports franchise in Oregon. The Seahawks and Timbers are their only real competition in this market. The Mariners don't have a big following in Oregon. I can see where the Blazers would come out on top here.

I can see Louisiana being called for the Saints. I'm an LSU alum and a huge fan of both.

If you love football, you're going to love both college and pro.
Saints own most of the state for the NFL, with a small Cowboys crowd in N La.

For colleges, LSU has a sizable and extremely loyal contingent. Tulane in Nola dilutes that some, and honestly, I'd say Southern and Grambling do for lots of black folks.

Most Southern and Tulane fans also like the Saints, (as does the LSU crowd); so that's where the difference lies.

When your nfl team sucks, the nfl is quite boring. Watching a college game is way more exciting anyways. Nfl is like golf compared to college.

Tulane is considerably smaller in size than LSU, actually about 1/2 the size in total enrollment. Its fan base is much smaller than LSU’s. Much of Tulane’s enrollment comes from outside the state, especially from the Northeast, which greatly impacts the size of the fan base locally, and those from outside the area generally are not invested in Tulane athletics.

As far as those who didn’t go to LSU, but other in-state schools, LSU has a lot of fans at those other schools, some more than others. You can visit other school campuses and see a fair amount of LSU t-shirts and hoodies.
