Now you know why Coach McClendon was pushed out by the LSU administration and BOS after the 1979 season.

We weren’t bad just weren’t that good and the SEC didn’t get the benefit of the doubt it does now

You’re telling me less than 10 years after this streak ended we added them to the SEC? It was a different era for sure

Just a true nightmare of a tenure. What a bad hiring miss.

I stand corrected then.
We were 8-4 after the bowl game and had a recollection that we were ranked.

And even with that, we’ve won 26 bowl games. State has only ever been to 26.

LSU sucking is hardly anything new.

Cholly Mac had some feared teams. It was simply a tale of 2 halves. Know your Cajun history bayou boy. 137–59–7

During his first 12 years (1962–1973), McClendon coached the Tigers to nine appearances in the final AP Poll, with an average rank of 9.22. During this time, LSU's record was 97–32–5 (.724 winning percentage) and LSU went to two Sugar Bowls (1965 and 1968), two Cotton Bowl Classics (1963 and 1966), and two Orange Bowls (1971 and 1974). LSU won nine games in five consecutive seasons from 1969 to 1973.
I would call 1973 the line of demarcation and Cholly never got that big, game to breakthrough.

Why Cajuns chose to misremember this guy's accomplishments so much is because he just couldn't beat Bear Bryant's ALABAMA teams. (2-14)

That's when ALABAMA took a lease out on Death Valley. We've been paying property tax ever since.

It was a different time back then. Also it's not like they didn't try to go different routes first. Unc fsu atm miami all said no. Clemson said yes but got caught cheating their asses off, plus geography mattered back then.

You’re right, one losing season since the turn of the century, multiple SEC titles, 4 national championship appearances, three titles and top five in wins during that time. The textbook definition of sucking.

How’s Tennessee fared over that time period?

I’ll hang up and listen.

Yeah we got some delusional fans that do want him fired. It's mainly the basketball only fans that jumped on the football bandwagon and expect the football team have success like the basketball program. And other reason why some want stoops fired is his contract which is my biggest criticism of stoops is he is paid top ten college football salary and goes 7-6 two years in a row and the kentucky football schedule the last years was set up perfectly to go 9-3 or 10-2 record. Also look up 2023 college football coach salaries he ended up making more money than Jim Harbaugh who won a national title. I will provide a link for 2023 coach salaries. LINK

I’m honestly shocked that LSU has a longer rut than the one they experienced in the early ‘90s.

DiNardo had a three year stretch from 95-97 where things were looking up, including 3 bowl wins, an upset of #1 Florida, and a 10 win season, then things fell apart again.

Otherwise the rest of the 90’s were abysmal.

The stretch from 1974-82 wasn’t as bad. It was a slow fall into mediocrity. A bunch of 7 or 8 win seasons, and were ranked at some point most seasons, just didn’t finish the season ranked.

LSU during their longest streak:
1974: 5-5-1
1975: 5-6
1976: 7-3-1
1977: 8-4
1978: 8-4
1979: 7-5
1980: 7-4
1981: 3-7-1

LSU wasn’t terrible in the 70s, just not good enough to be top 20. 89-94 had some absolutely terrible teams.
