Didn't he miss some easy kicks in preseason too?

NFL teams don't have time for that shite. That said, he couldn't have been more impressive at Auburn. I hope he gets it turned around.

He really has not been consistent since he has been there. Not sure what is up with him.

I believe he will land somewhere else but you just cant miss two easy kids in overtime.

I don't what happens. I think it is a mental thing.

it's 100% mental. Most kicking issues are. Any guy that is invited to an NFL camp at that position has the ability to be a great kicker. Look at Blair Walsh from UGA. Dude was nails for 2 years in college, then his senior year he goes 21-35 on the year. Then he leads the NFL his rookie year in field goals made, fast forward a few years, and he forgets how to kick it through the uprights again.

Bailey, who dealt with groin and back injuries over the last two years, missed five of his last 12 field goal attempts. He also had two extra-point misses in the final month of the season, the first of his career.
I'd have stuck with Carlson over aging, decrepit, slipping Dan Bailey

The pressure must be incredibly intense at that level.
A lot of it is mental.

But also, you have faster guys around the end. Less time to kick the ball

The goal posts are also more narrow in the NFL, aren't they?

He's only 30. Last year was his worst year but he was hurt too.

Vikings are a Super Bowl contender and don't have time to wait for Carlson to get his shite together

Maybe the best college kicker I've ever seen.

I was 100% sure he'd have a long pro career.

Glad him and JK Scott are gone from the West.

He's only 30. Guys like Adam Vinatieri and Morten Andersen are kicking until they're eligible for social security

No. College and NFL goalposts have been the same for the last 20, maybe 25 years. Hashmarks are different, but they are narrower in the NFL, with the hashes lining up with the uprights, where in college they are outside the uprights.

The NFL ball is slightly larger in both length and short and long circumferences. Inflation is the same. Not sure if the slightly larger ball makes a difference in where the foot has to contact the ball, or how it comes off or not.

one would think ,based on shape, an NFL ball would be easier to kick than a college ball

I think he will catch on, but as one coach said, kickers have to get cut at least once before they toughen up enough for the NFL. I also don't think the Minnesota coached helped by deriding him in the preseason. You gotta build up the confidence of kickers.

They are signing Bailey. It's not a bad move at all.

Yeah Bailey has something like a lifetime 88% success at FG in the NFL...heard he had turned down multiple offers before the Vikings nabbed him...

Speaking of kickers, JK Scott had a 52 yard average for Green Bay yesterday in 5 kicks.

He had a terrible awful no-good day, to be sure, but think they might be jumping the gun a bit here.

Kicking is an art and a science. I was good friends with our starting HS kicker -- as a third string LB, I was in the same tier as a first string kicker -- and he showed me exactly how much it can be a game of millimeters.

That said, any kicker joining the NFL should spend all spring and summer practicing exclusively on an NFL ball before his rookie season.

Edit: Incidentally, I went to a smallish private school. We didn't actually have enough players to have a 3rd string, but there I was.
