Kirby did too much on defense; I don’t think Saban makes same mistake

I think it was in 2011 or 2012 when Gus was featured on ESPN in a segment about getting yards against an Alabama defense. This might have been 2009 actually after the Iron Bowl. Not sure, but it was during a time that Saban had struggled to shut down Auburn’s offense.
Anyway, Gus broke down the Saban defense (coordinated by Kirby at the time) and showed how their defense lived by bringing field pressure. He also discussed the multiple coverages that Saban liked to use in the secondary.
I had forgotten about that segment until the game yesterday when Auburn scored on a receiver screen out of the trips formation. Georgia was showing blitz from the field - two guys even - and Gus (or Chip...whoever) had the perfect call. It was obvious to me sitting at home that Georgia was running that blitz and it seemed like easy picking for Gus to get a big play.
If you think back to the LSU game and what LSU did to adjust to Auburn’s fast start, you’ll realize that blitzing Gus and doing fancy things on defense actually plays right into his hands. LSU simply brought a safety into the box and played more of a base defense with man to man coverage. Let the defensive ends force Stidham into bad throws and shut down the run game by clogging holes; not blitzing to blow it up in the backfield.
Kirby was too cute with his blitzes and coverages and should have played it simple. I can’t imagine Saban and Pruitt making the same mistake.
Going to be a close, low scoring game in the IB as long as the Auburn defense shows up.
*Not really considering injuries here. I’ll never expect an Alabama team to lose the physical game more than once no matter how banged up they are.

Our offense and special teams made our D suck.

I think the defensive coaches overcompensated for Stidham as a passer which honestly...what can Georgia do when their best defensive backfield players are all around 6'? I think if a rematch were to happen, Georgia would play more of a base defense and probably stop Johnson but if you wanted to see what would happen in response to that, watch the first half of the Missouri game.
(Georgia also made defensive adjustments that did work, but after the Hardman fumble the whole team laid down)

Yeah I remember the segment and that screen is a good example of a great call.
We rolled out right into that blitz early in the game. Then we tried to throw back behind it and the pass was knocked down, but it was definitely there. Then the third time it worked for the td.

I know the segment you were talking about Gus said Kirby like to bring backside pressure with a safety or corner. Just looked to me like Georgia got manhandled and without a run game Fromm isn’t going to win them any games also hurts that Fromm isn’t a legit running threat which you pretty much have to have these days.

Auburn won't dominate the LOS against bama like we did against UGA.

Yea, I am 100% confident Pruitt will give us every chance to win with his plan and adjustments.
Pruitt > Kirby (and I love Kirby) and 100% Pruitt > Kirby when it comes to Gus and the Gus tree.

That is what won the game for Auburn. UGA fans can talk about this play or that penalty all they want. They were absolutely dominated on both LOS.............and you will lose games when that happens every single time.
UGA had 46 yards rushing. 46 yards. That isn't on penalties or muffed punts.

I agree with both of those comments.
However I will say we are a bit different O than in the past. Lot less tempo, less zone read, more traditional drop back passing.

Agree. My 2 week out thoughts are that I'm nervous about consistent push from Auburn's OL in the run game. However, I think we are going to mind frick the shite out of Stidham. Will that be enough? I don't know, I think it's all on our guys up front to control the Auburn run game. If they can't I don't think the rest matters.

Kirby actually was known for bringing less pressure than what Pruitt is doing now. His feeling was that Alabama always better talent on the D-line so they didn’t need to bring as much additional pressure.

Idk about that. Auburn’s 3rd down defense was the best I’ve seen this year.

Georgia also had penalties at key moments and a costly turnover. AU made them pay
We need to play smart and disciplined football.
Oh, is AU gonna soak their field again this year?

Our DL is not good. We need them to step up and help mask deficiencies for young LB and they can't.

Those two blitzers showed so early that I honestly they would drop back and the blitz would come from the other side. When they came across the line I saw immediately the pass coming and knew it would be big yards.
Great game by Auburn. Made us look really bad. See you in Athens next year, and we'll all remember a-hole Gus.

I think it may look like this on TV, but it will be because AU’s receivers will have trouble getting open. That’s what happened against Clemson and LSU. They had the athletes to shut down Gus’s relatively unsophisticated route trees.
GA has those guys too but since they were getting gashed in the run game, Kirby had to take chances that left them vulnerable elsewhere.
IMO whether the Iron Bowl looks like the LSU/Clemson games or more like the GA game depends on the push AU gets up front.

If Auburn can hold the ball and run the play count up Bama will tire in the second half. Their pass coverage this year is Meh at best. LB injuries have limited their run stopping some but is still very good.
Saban commits his safeties (at least one) to keep the run game in check and he will have to against the Barners. This leaves WR's against man coverage on the outside. Good play action can burn Bama's secondary if you have a WR that can beat the CB deep. We had this opportunity 5-6 times and Etling could not get the pass to the WR

Aubie has a problem they did not have vs Georgia and his name is Jalen Hurts. You won't crash down to stop the run because Hurts will torch you. His passing is improving enough to make his arm a threat.
Basically Fromm is a statue back in the pocket, Hurts is not. I look for a surprise on D for Alabama as Mack Wilson should be back and you might see a face or two on the outside that haven't been seen since week one. If they get all of those three back..
