Auburn and Texas A&M have shite pedigree as well and both have been recruiting well.

You must not have any knowledge of Ole Miss NBA players - it's worse - comparing TAMU to Ole Miss in terms of NBA presence is laughable.

And Auburn is recruiting well for other reasons. I've already addressed that part of it. Ole Miss chose not to go that route. I personally wanted the recruiting AAU savant, but they didn't.

AK needed to be fired bc he got stale - 12 years at one place without huge amounts of winning is rare.

Meant more the mid-major hot coach route, which is what Grant and Horne certainly were.

Players from MS are in the league. Why didn't they got to OM or MSU?

I can only speak for Ole Miss but by and large our fanbase has refused to play big boy basketball. We finally gave AK a nice arena but Ole Miss has to have fan and booster buy-in. Especially with the nature of college basketball recruiting.

Of course Ole Miss' NBA presence is non-existent but I'm not really sure why that's a prohibitive factor from ever recruiting well. UF's NBA presence prior to Donovan was similarly barren.

And I don't know how you can talk down Ole Miss' NBA presence and then say that AK's tenure was "without huge amounts of winning." The past ten years are the best stretch in Ole Miss program history. He may have gotten stale, sure, but you don't replace him with a guy who is very similar but eight years older.

So were Will Wade, Mike White, and Bryce Drew. Billy Donovan, too, for that matter.

I don't see the similarities between hiring a 30-something coaching prospect and a 58-year-old coach who's been at Middle for over a decade.

Wait...we've been told that little blip on the FBI's radar last Sept was nothing more than one, single, solitary rogue Asst Head Coach.

This hire has Chancellor Gumballs written all over it. I don’t think he’s a bad coach per se, but it makes no sense to go from Kennedy to him. So boring, so uninspired, so Vitter. It’s a joke

What other candidates were looked at or mentioned? Were there any? This looks likes a typical lazy Ole Miss/State hire. State has actually gotten better with our recent football and basketball hires, but we have had our share of lazy hires.

Matta visited Oxford, but it seems like he has to interview to keep receiving his buyout. I’m sure we looked at Penny, but it’s hard to play “the game” when your athletic department is already under a lot of scrutiny. We probably had some contact with Tom Crean and Steve Forbes, among others. Naturally we went with the least interesting of the bunch. It’s also a massive red flag to me that both State and LSU passed him over despite his ties to both. Plus I don’t like hiring a guy who’s strongest conference ties are to Ole Miss’ two biggest rivals, who will turn 59 early next season, and who in no way comes across as an upgrade or even a philosophy shift from the coach we just fired. It doesn’t check a single box for me, but obviously I hope it works out

I'm not exactly celebrating this hire but Davis has won 8 out of the last 10 against SEC opponents.

Davis has had success no doubt, but I figured with the new arena and facilities y'all might have made a bigger "splash" hire. I hope Kermit does well. I would like for both our teams to be competitive at the same time. I remember well when the Thursday SEC Tourney games between the 7-10 seeds was called "Basketball Night in Mississippi" because State and Ole Miss were always involved in it.

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is that our Athletic Department is stretched thin as frick right now.

We've spent millions on legal representation over the last few years and just missed out on $8 million(iirc) in bowl money.

We're also honoring AK's buyout even though he stepped down.

Damn, sucks for him.

He held out too long for a bug job and spent so long at MTSU that his prime completely passed him over and everybody forgot his name and now he's stuck at Ole Miss in a time when the SEC is so strong that even if he gets OM running at full potential, they still cant possibly hope to finish higher than 10th in the league.

Sad

Y'all are in a tough spot after that shitshow of the last 3-5 yrs in your AD.

I don't see this as a bad hire, it's a low key/safe hire to get OM through a transition period.

Davis is experienced and seasoned enough to get you through this rough spell. It'll take a couple of years to stash back some $$ and shake off the stench of the past. Then OM will be in better shape financially and from a perspective standpoint to go for a splash hire.
