Is this the first time a college player has opted out of the playoff?

quote:

#Buckeyes announce WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba will not play in the CFP semifinal against Georgia and begin preparing for the NFL draft. His college career is over.

Ryan Day: "He has had such a major impact here in Columbus, on and off the field, in a relatively short period of time"

ETA: He must feel really confident in anOSU's ability to beat UGA

If he isn't injured then that's pretty selfish.

From a fan perspective, I don’t mind someone holding out of an non-CFP bowl.

But man, I’d be pretty annoyed at a guy holding out of a CFP bowl that will absolutely be competitive.

This is a bit different. He's been out (and still is) for most of season with a hamstring injury. So this is more him acknowledging he won't be healthy enough in time and is focusing on rehab/draft.

That's a huge frick you to the school/program that put a lot of resources to help him in this situation.

Pretty sure it is, and it's pathetic.

Live by a post-season system of worthless exhibition games, die by a post-season system of worthless exhibition games.

Bowl games preventing a real postseason in favor of their own bottom line is a stain the game will be lucky to ever escape.

Jalen Waddle shattered his ankle and hobbled all over the field in the national title game in 2020 but was still there for his team.

If he's too hurt to play, Day isn't going to put him in the game. But to opt out of the CFP is bullshite

I'll just say out loud what every UGA fan is thinking:

Thank goodness. I did not wanna face that guy.

I see this more as, "I'm still hurt and there isn't a timeline that has me back in time" move.

I don't think he'd quit on the team if he thought he'd be ready to roll come NYE.

Yes, Marvin Harrison Jr is enough already. I did not want Smith-Njigba back in the slightest.

Why announce anything though? Just be with your team.

If so, why announce it now (or at all)? At least let UGA think they might have to face him.

“Opting out” for him is really closer to “I will not be medically cleared until after the CFP final date and so I want to sign with an agent now and get some upfront $$ and enjoy the holidays”.

So the media/fans know what's going on and don't spend the lead up to the CFP hounding the coaches and players in interviews about his status.
