He’s young and has no titles. I don’t want us trapped in some mega contract with an unproven coach but I am not in charge

Oregon went 22-6 in the two seasons before he arrived
Sounds like he knows how to maintain a successful program

Saban also recommended Houston Nutt to Bertman when he left for nfl

Imho, it's Dabo, Kiffin, then Lanning.
It's not going to be Dabo. There'd be a riot. For reasons I don't quite understand, most Alabama fans seem to be squarely against Dabo coming home. He's got the record, national titles, the pedigree... trained under Gene Stallings, no less... but none of that seems to matter.

He may have felt like he wanted to take a gigantic dump on the LSU program.

22-5 at Oregon with Bo Nix as his QB.
Two Top 7 recruiting classes the last two cycles (#4 and #7).
Coached under Saban and Kirby.
Lanning would be a gift.

Putting aside my Auburn bias, it seems really unlikely you’ll be able to sustain Saban’s work for more than a couple of seasons. Not that I expect Alabama to cease being competitive. I just think there might be one or two dudes out there who could do it with the minimal fall off and it’s tossing darts as to who that would be.
So go get a promising high profile coach who will get some buzz and knows the conference and hope for the best while accepting the reality that the next guy is probably going to be gone within 5-6 years. Seems like Lanning is as good a bet as any other and it seems unlikely he will dig a considerable hole for the guy who follows.

He has aggressively denounced the transfer portal and NIL. That’s basically screaming “I WANT THE GAME TO PASS ME BY”

The run of Clemson during Dabo, may be one of the greatest mysteries never explained.

Terrible hire, good fall guy

I think Dabo is a narrative/culture coach and he’s one of the few who didn't crash and burn and was able to sustain success.
Crash and burn versions - Ed O, Gene Chizik, etc.
Anyway, Bama doesn’t need that

Is Bama willing to pay his 20 mil buyout?

Don't want Lanning.
Give me Sark, Kiff, or Dabo.

The only Oregon coach to flame out is the guy who succeeded Chip. Selfridge I think is his name. Oregon can't compare to the Bama job in size and expectations.

Think it would be a good hire, and would be a universally praised hire. I could also see the pressure crack him if things don't go great right out of the gate.

Cristobal looked good at Oregon too.

I doubt Dabo will get much traction.
1. As you say, he is not embracing the changes required to stay up with the game. Clemson has slid a bit and it is evident.
2. His family has embraced the Sackerlina upstate area. That's all his kids have ever known and his wife reportedly loves the area. A lot. Dabo is now ingrained there.
3. He's the polar opposite of Saban's style - at least that's how he's viewed by fans in Tuscaloosa. I think that after 17 years of Saban, we'd rather have a my-way process-oriented coach as opposed to a happy go lucky player's coach. Maybe those aren't fair adjectives for Dabo but that's the perception. Bama needs a program manager who will not kneel before the boosters, and again, Dabo doesn't seem to be that guy. Whether he is or not.
4. With the escalation clauses that several of the top coaches have in their contracts, Dabo can earn a bigger paycheck by just sitting back and watching Bama unload the bank. They don't even have to do it for HIM to get a bigger salary. Why uproot your family and take on more stress when you don't have to?
