Did Texas A&M get guys because they loved A&M or because they were paid under the table?
Scholarships should be 3 year contracts. But a player can transfer and play immediately if the head coach leaves or it’s to a school within driving range if there’s a family sickness ( lawyers can spell that out). Anyone else 1 year sit.
Money can not be offered through any collective. Money has to be negotiated by play and NIL recipient.
Let’s get back to what NIL was intended for….
Players using their likeness to profit on merch, gaming, endorsements.
This should be done through marketing departments at the school ( helps marketing students too) once they are signed to a ( 3 year deal).

I have to say I agree with his assessment. It’s on a path to ruin the collegiate athletic experience as we know it. Is it really beneficial to the student athlete?
The way they done it ruined cfb. If they would take the money and put it in a fund and split it evenly then it would work. Paying different amounts and different schools having more money to bid is what is ruining it.

College athletics are on a slow death roll. Fans are probably in the denial phase

Excellent responses! Thanks all who participated in the thread. A lot of approaches suggested that could work.

That's a lie. What is recruiting then if these guys have barely climbed out of bed. Power school athletic recruits are at the top of their billion dollar plus sport when it comes to college football and basketball.

1. Players have never been as invested in the schools as the fans are. Folks need to understand that.

2. The money is going to keep happening. People need to get over that.

3. The key is to rein in the Wild West transfer portal so that coaches don’t have to recruit their rosters every frickin’ year and fans can have some sense of continuity. That will have to be done contractually which doesn’t necessarily mean making the players employees.

Saban paid his players for his entire tenure at Alabama and quit when it became fair across the board with NIL.

Saban is not some novel genius on the subject, he's the only man with gravitas and capability to speak about it. He's not a current head coach who can be negatively recruited via distortions of his statements. He is a name every old fart in congress actually knows.

100%. What needs to happen is the legal protections to contract athletes but in some status that does not make them employees of the university. Essentially recreate the old scholarship limitations but within contract law so it is all hunky dory with our august liberal institutions.

Don’t spin this as liberal-conservative. I will remind you that the Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for NIL was 9-0 with Alito, Thomas, Barrett, Kavanaugh, Roberts and Gorsuch all in the majority.

So, Saban can get filthy rich but the players can't? That's a very un-American and Communistic POV to have...

I don't think it matters one bit what coaches are being paid in relation to NIL. No matter how many 5 stars on your team you have(Texas A&M, etc.) you still have to have a coach that can motivate, scheme, and game plan to win. Should the players get a piece of the pie, certainly, but this has turned into a runaway train and something has to be done with NIL and the transfer portal before we lose college football forever.

Literally said in his statement that he has no problem with NIL or players earning money from it.

Can you really argue with him when he's right? I mean paying High School guys millions when some of them havent played a down in College yet. There has to be some kind of cap and get paid only if you have proved your worth. It doesnt mean everyone has to be a star to get paid . Some guys contribute just by practicing against other players but there needs to be a pay scale. Not just paying a player coming in 5 million dollars based on hype.

Is Nick Saban right? Is Hugh Freeze right? Is Lane Kiffin right? Is Kirby Smart Right? This is not new light.

Let me put it into terms the rant can relate to. The NIL is the windshield and college football is the bug.

Players want and deserve NIL , but should not be able to just be a hired gun leaving and getting to play immediately at another place year to year. I’m just waiting for a NIL deal To basically remove a star player from a championship game. For example say Georgia playing Ohio St in The championship game but a big OSU money donor offering a huge NIL deal for the next year to a Georgia stud player not to play thus hurting Georgia’s chances. It’s coming at some point.

Having some sense of amateurism, titanic regular season games/rivalries, and always a glorious New Year’s Day was what made college football what it is.

All of that is being thrown away for what amounts to a semi pro NFL minor league.
