Is leaning on the past REALLY a consolation in CFB?

After uga pulverized LSU in the SECCG, an LSU friend of mine quickly pointed out that LSU STILL had a better record against UGA in the last decade or so. I asked him; "Is that REALLY any kind of consolation to you right now?" His response; "Nah, not really. But it's all I have."

Does the past matter as much as the present? Does it really help Bama fans now to point out Saban has more NCs than KS? Or is really about the here and the now? Serious question...

UGA's 2022 National Championship is now in the past.

You’re still talking about the SECCG? Wow

I will not obsess about how great the 2021 or 22 UGA team was in comparison.

Uh...not yet, but if Bama takes us down next season, then it will be. And I'll gladly confess that Bama is back on top. Well, not 'gladly', but I'll honestly confess it.

Yes let’s talk about the future that we can’t predict.

Seems like you started a thread and brought up LSU & Bama…

Nah, just pointing out how some fans try to bring up the past to make themselves feel better about the present. It was just an example.

Not within the context of CFB. Uga is the champ until we ain’t.

Just examples. I could have pointed out many teams...Gators, Auburn, etc. Many teams with storied pasts. Heck, as a UGA fan, I'll admit we didn't have much of a past to lean on prior to our current run...or as much of a past as many other programs have had in the SEC.

Fans can afford to feel this way, the team cannot. The 2023 UGA isn’t champ of anything. They gotta earn that title.

There will always be a minority of any fan base to do or say something, celebrate your past or recent successes as we never know what the future holds, though Georgia is being built properly to sustain an elite level. That’s all there is to it.

I'm thinking that you've just realized a human trait that everyone shares in.

Just seeing how everyone really feels about this. Again, not that UGA has had too much of a grand recent past lately to brag about, but I am more about the here and the now. I promise, if we get trashed by Florida next season, it's not going to be much of a consolation to me that we mopped the floor with them this season. That's just me... just wondering how you and others feel about that?

Man, at the end of the day, bragging about the accomplishments, or getting pissy about a bunch of teenagers/early 20 year olds is pretty lame and weird any way you slice it. But here we are. People are going to brag about the present, past, and future. None of it really matters. I wouldn't think too much about it.

As a Alabama fan I appreciate the heck out of Nick Saban leading us to 6 national titles, but we all know we live in a what have you done for me lately world.. The only thing I look at is that Kirby Smart has won 2 titles since we last had one. I think people lean on the past if it fits the argument or the narrative they are trying to push. The programs that are in the playoff hunt every year I don't think they lean on the past for consolation. Teams like Tennessee live in the past 1998 to be exact LOL. LSU fans just like to argue so they are also quick to bring up the past. They are going to be talking about beating Alabama last year for the next 10 years lol, they were so excited about the win they forgot to show up for the rest of their games.

I understand. It's actually just a coping mechanism that people use. Most of us, consciously or not, will try to find consolation in a negative situation (could be rap lyrics! )

This is pretty well said. The last time Tech beat UGA, they acted like the second coming of Christ had happened for an entire year until we silenced them the next year. My family member that are Auburn fans throw a celebration when they beat Bama and talk about it for months. lol

LOL I guess if you aren't lucky enough to be a Bama or UGA fan and be in the playoff hunt every year you need something to hold onto. I don't wish losing to Tennessee on any school or fan base in the country. I would much rather lose to our biggest rival Auburn over Tennessee. The Vols have before this year have been a complete dumpster fire, however for the last 20 plus years TN fans are always the loudest most obnoxious in the room. Thanks for humbling them by the way, they were getting out of line lol
