Is it really true that Tennessee's pass defense is ranked #128 out of 131 teams?

Its definitely bad but they are also scoring so much that teams feel like they have to keep up and are more aggressive on offense, i.e. UF going for it on 4th like 6 times with the majority being in situations where it "wasn't necessary"

What surprises me is Tenn. high flying offense only has roughly 330 yards more than LSU’s “boring” offense.

This is what we said about LSU in 2019 and this board said that LSU's defense was trash that year.

*checks stats*

LSU had the 33rd overall team defense in 2019.

330/4 games is 82.5 yards per game, thats a pretty big difference especially when UTK has played two ranked teams both of which either have a good defense (Pitt) or have a good reputation of defense historically and good recruits on D (Florida)

Poor Barners completely getting overlooked ahead of LSU's loss next Saturday. Be a shame if that Jordan Hare voodoo came through and caused back to back losses

I mean, Anthony Richardson is not a good passer and he went for 453 yards (previous career high was 168). So yeah, they are not good against the pass. FYI that amount equals almost a third of Richardson's career passing yards.

I think we have to start looking at other metrics to really judge a defense, and we definitely have to see the context of how good the offense is and what kind of plays the other team is running. Defense will increasingly become about big plays and getting the ball back and less about how many yards you're giving up. Tennessee isn't necessarily great at that either, but I'm just saying in general.

As terrible as the secondary has been, the rush defense and scoring defense has been pretty solid. Some metrics to add to what you listed:

Scoring offense:
UT: #4 - #1 in SEC (48.5 ppg)
LSU: #27 - #5 in SEC (39.3 ppg)

On average UT is scoring 9.2pts more per game than LSU

Scoring defense:
LSU: #16 - #6 in SEC (14 ppg)
UT: #34 - #7 in SEC (19 ppg)

On average LSU is giving up 5 points less per game than UT

Rush defense:
UT: 24th (#3 in the SEC)
LSU: 42nd (#7 in the SEC)

Pass defense:
LSU: #8 (#2 in the SEC)
UT: #128 (#14 in the SEC)

Yup. Style of play is important.

We have sold out against the run against the only two good teams we played to make them one dimensionsal and beat us throwing the ball and AR had the game of his life and Pitt's QBs aren't exactly slouches. It is what it is.

I am extremely proud of our dline this year. We need to throw the kitchen sink at transfer portal DBs this year though and recruit the top ones hard as well. Time to put that NIL money to max usage.
