Is Georgia's 2021 Defense That Much Better Than 2020?

Common opponents so far.

2021

SC: 13
KY: 13
AR: 0
AU: 10

AVG: 9 PPG

2020

SC:16
KY: 3
AR: 10
AU: 6

AVG: 8.5 PPG

Didn't play Vandy last year, but wouldn't have given up many points to them. Clemson and UAB probably have about equally good (i.e., not good) offenses in 2021.

Guess the argument is that these teams are much improved on offense in 2021 and UGA is still holding them to the same point levels?

We are giving up 7.5 vs those teams. USC only scored 6 against our defense.

And the answer is clearly yes.

They are probably better, but I think the difference has probably been exaggerated. More importantly for UGA, the two offenses they need to get through in this conference, Alabama and Florida, are quite significantly worse than last year.

Maybe, but the UAB and one UK td were in garbage time. And our other metrics are way up this year like sacks, and pressures. Plus we're holding teams to some ridiculous number under their normal points scored.

Mostly the same players with more time and learning under their belt and the rise of Jalen Carter/Quay Walker/Channing Tindall have made this team defense way better overall and that's even after losing most of the secondary.

Garbage time. I think this is one of the dumbest phrases ever developed. If there is time on the clock, the game is not over. The points count the same. Any stat achieved counts the same. Any personal career accomplishment during so-called time will still go on record. Calling any point in a game “garbage” diminishes the game, those who play it, those who coach it, and those who enjoy watching it. ( And, Porter, I’m not picking on you for the record. I’ve seen this phrase used over and over by many, and just think the phrase is overused and devalues the game we all love)

I wouldn't say Bamas offense is significantly worse. They lost a lot but they replaced them with very talented players who are getting better every week. And they still have Metchie who is one of the best wr in the league, if not the best.

They are. Mostly…

Auburn is 9 ppg and 70 ypg better
Kentucky is a 6-7 ppg and 70 ypg better
Arkansas is 5-6 ppg and 70 ypg better

South Carolina is almost exactly the same…like within 6 ypg and 1.5 ppg.

So:

Auburn: 35% up on ppg, 18% up on ypg
Kentucky: 30% up on ppg, 24% up on ypg
Arkansas: 21% up on ppg, 18% up on ypg
South Carolina: push

That’s fairly significant when you consider that type of increase in ypg alone is the difference between an offense in the 70s range and a top 20 offense

EDIT: Or to put it another way, averaging it out, the teams mentioned are 5.25 ppg better than last year. So, using your numbers, if Georgia’s defense was just the same as last year, they should have averaged 13.75 ppg, 2 touchdowns each, basically. As it is, Georgia has held them to 65% of the projected scoring when based against last year

Disagree and so do advanced stats. Strategies and mindset change too much to ignore it like you want to, and it doesnt do a single ounce of diminishing the sport.

Advanced stats, tools of Vegas/ gamblers.
So what if strategy and mindset shift? That’s part of coaching. It’s an important/ vital aspect to the game. Prepping young players/ getting them live reps… vital… not garbage.
We can disagree, though.

When both coaches are comfortable letting the clock run out, knowing no matter what happens the games outcome isn’t in doubt, it’s garbage time. That was clearly the case with UK last Saturday. You didn’t try to win after you got the ball with 11 minutes left

You are still wrong.

UGA def went prevent and let UK runt he clock out last Saturday. That was a mindset and defensive philosophy change because the game was over.

It was indeed Garbage time.

I haven't run the stats to be sure, but you're leaving out that all of these teams have played non P5 or even FCS teams this year and have inflated their stats against them. And they did not because of Covid last year. So the numbers aren't directly comparable. I bet these offenses are all about the same as last year.

You mean we took what the defense gave us instead of trying desperation deep throws into double or triple coverage? Then your coach should have changed his mindset and tried to get us off the field. We also took at least one deep shot from about mid field. Your dudes blitzed and got a sack on one down.

The dawgs were not in a prevent. They were at worst dropping to the sticks in their usual zone look. And, also, see above, there was a least one blitz on that drive which resulted in a sack.

If anything, I wish the Cats had had that mentality on every drive. Dink, dunk, scrap, etc. It seemed to really piss off everybody in red.

I went back and watched. The crowd was nuts. It didn't seem like anyone had left. Nobody in that place wanted us to score. The demeanor of your coaches, players, fans was screaming for UK to be stopped, which is in addition to the literal screaming and yelling that was going on. That is why I don't think it was garbage time. I really don't know why you guys are so touchy about this.

Also, you missed the point of what I was saying about "garbage" time in the first place.

Your coach threw in the towel with nearly an entire quarter to go. When your coach is playing to make the score look better on Sunday rather than to win, it’s garbage time.

It wasn't garbage time to your fans, coaches, and players. I suggest you re-watch the last drive.

wait... did you even read the posts?

Do you think UGA will choke it all away again or is this finally the year?
