Which is my point. The only kids going through our development programs come from wealthy families.

More rich people steering their children to soccer from football will have a marginal effect on both sports.

agree with this. soccer can improve in this country with developmental changes at the youth level. soccer can become DOMINANT in this country when the socio-economic level of those playing the sport begins to drop. which is what i'm assuming you were referring to when you said "hungry."

this is what i'm hoping we see happen in the future as football popularity declines. but the ussf needs to make a massive effort at targeting inner cities and other communities that can't afford to play in the current setup.

Families that are on the higher end of the economic spectrum won't be letting their kids play it. Soccer will gain massive ground in this country soon. Not making the World Cup is going to bring about some serious changes in that world as well.

Laughable.

Americans will embrace hockey and rugby before soccer.

Soccer is a terrible game with stupid, illogical rules. Those idiots can't even figure out how to use a clock properly.

Soccer is a non-starter.

Football is too profitable to just disappear.

They'll just change the rules over and over till it's a completely different game.

It's already getting that way. You can hardly hit anyone without getting kicked out of the game.

We will have virtual reality football where avatars will be playing with inputs from athlete's brain impulses.

There will be studio announcers who are not actually on location but in "studio" some place like their living room.

The fact your common sense and thoughtful post has all down arrows shows it will be around. People know it's bad, but don't care. We aren't different from the Romans. We love glory and entertainment.

Roman citizens rationalized: "yeah it is obviously bad for them but they made choices to end up there and they built entertainment out of the excitement and violence."

Today we say the same, "yeah it's obviously not good for them, but it's their choice and look at the glory they get."

I dont understand all the BS about CTE and football ending. If a player dosnt want to risk the injury or getting CTE, then they shouldnt play. Players now know the risk. If you ask a kid from the hood what would he rather, millions of dollars and a chance of developing CTE, or getting killed in a gang, going to jail, or working a shite job his whole life, I can assure you that the kid will pick the money every time.

So, Burg, will the players be people who are in jail and displayed for our entertainment? Concussions instead of lions. Equipped violence instead of swords and axes?

Love to see all the CTE "science"in regards to Soccer,Boxing,MMA,Skiing and people who've never participated in sports (yep they found it in them as well)

None of those sports involve people colliding each other at high speeds time and time again. The only thing football can really do is be like rugby and eliminate protective equipment such as helmet and pads altogether. Rugby players can't tackle each other with the forcefulness that football players do without risking serious injury every other play due to the lack of protective equipment. But Rugby players get CTE too. And American football players are a lot bigger and faster. However you look at it, there is no solution to the problem without drastically changing the elements of the game.

No. I think the tackling and hitting rules will change but it will not be that different.

I must have missed the part that said that playing football is a requirement. Nowadays, everyone is aware of the potential health dangers. If you still decide to play, then that's on you.

Some certainly involve repeated blows to the head and collisions with other objects to the head at a high rates of speed.

Football has changed dramatically in regards to high speed collision involving the helmet and head area.I'd say the vast majority I witness in the NFL or college
involve the upper torso in between the knees and head.

And are lineman REALLY colliding into each other at a "high rate of speed"?

With how many snowflakes are getting positions of power...absolutely.

In 20 years nothing about America will be manly.

Sadly this is what's happening.

The feminization of society is out of control.

Masculine virtues, being strong, aggressive, competition, assertive, are presented as negatives in school and in the media.

They call it "toxic masculinity", aka ACTUAL masculininty.

The "feminized" way of behaving is now seen as the 'correct' way to behave.

We are moving to a point that any contact to the head will pretty much be prohibited. Also helmets may start changing. Still protective from inside but much softer on the outside. Rugby and other contact sports don’t use helmets. I wonder if they have less concussion problems in that game. I think so but may be completely wrong.

Are these people going to foot the bill for a league when whichever league they follow gets sued out of existence?

Right or wrong some lawsuit somewhere is going to pin culpability for personal damage on a governing body of the sport (NCAA, NFL, High School AAs) and then all the others are going to fold their tents

I like the suggestion of going back to Leather helmets and no face masks and let natural selection and common sense rule the day.

I do think all the head gear gives a person a sense of security that simply appears not to be there, so lets get rid of this fallacy

I agree. The helmet of today gives the impression of armor, but it is really anything but.

I would love to see the leather helmets make a comeback.

CTE has been known for years. Are players suddenly turning down the chance at millions to not end up with it? NOPE. It’s no different than doing anything else like climbing or cave diving, or motocross. Everybody knows the risks.
