How does leaving a pitcher in for 120+ pitches constitute desperation again? Desperation would be pulling him earlier. I believe the word you are looking for is patience.

In 1974 Nolan Ryan purportedly threw 235 pitches in a game against the Red Sox. He would start another game 3 days later, pitching 6 scoreless innings. That part sadly is always overlooked.
