When I pull up all diesel short beds with 40k or less miles, chevy and gmc's are anywhere between 5-7k less. Are they that bad?

They are decent enough but Fords are built heavier. Or at least used to be. Both GM and Ford are better than the Ram. The Cummins engine is solid in the Ram but expect more problems with the body holding up.

It will need to do a little work but realistically not that much heavy towing, lots of mileage tho

If it’s not going to be used as a mule I’d personally steer away from a diesel. Fuel and maintenance are more expensive as well as repairs.

But that’s just my opinion.

I drive for work. Work pays for gas. I'm driving like 30-40k miles a year. I'd prefer it be capable also .

If it’s me, I’d look for the size of truck I want and forget about a diesel engine under those circumstances.

There are pros and cons to each brand. Pick my poison there.

No more diesel vehicles for me.

Honestly every Heavy Duty Truck has its own set of faults. Drive all three and select the one that most comfortably fits your needs.

Pay close attention to the CarFax, not so much for accident history. A clean history CarFax might be hiding an accident repair that was never reported. Look at the CarFax for a complete, and detailed, maintenance history.

No matter the pre-owned Truck you buy, get an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Best of luck in your search.

The GM trucks have an independent front suspension, Ford and Ram still put a solid front axle in their HD trucks.

With less moving parts, the solid front axles are naturally more robust, but are also harder and less safe to drive on the highway (death wobble).

It just comes down to personal preference

Where the truck was driven and for what really matter on the history. Like always, try to avoid the snow and salt trucks.

Diesel is great for those miles.

Yeah, I bought a new truck this year, I was amazed at how many Canadian trucks kept popping up when I would pull CarFax. Dealer told me this has become more common since the pandemic when supply was low, dealers had to import a lot of stock from Canada to keep up with demand.

My brother has a GMC Duramax with just over 300K miles on it. He's had zero issues with it mechanically. Maybe that is the exception, rather than the rule...but it's been a great truck for him.

I loved my diesel superduty but finally got tired of repairs. Minimum $800 to touch that engine, usually four figures
