Anything that guy had a hand in went to absolute shite (after the championsip) and Tenn. wants to immortalize that dirt bag. They should make him put all his belongings in a wagon and boot from the state permanently. He can go reside somewhere else in Appalachia.

Not really. Dude had championship caliber talent but was a drama queen. He benefited from great legacy kids but couldn’t recruit at a high level without them. He didn’t recruit Oline at all. You need 3-4 a year and he recruited 3-4 total in his stay at Tennessee.

I'm not disputing any of the facts of your statement. What I'm saying is that none of that justifies the pure vitriol that many Vol fans have toward Butch. He was a helluva lot more loyal to Tennessee than Kiffin was, but many of you guys are still in love with Kiffin even after how he left you in the dead of night, even with Orgeron trying to steal your recruits for him. Butch didn't get you in trouble with the NCAA like Pruitt is going to, but most Vol fans hate Butch more than Bama fans hate Franchione.

When a guy leads you to your worst season in school history while spouting cliches about energy vampires and bricks, then goes to work for your biggest rival while still getting paid millions by you, and then celebrates the next by smoking a cigar after thoroughly dismantling a team that he recruited and built, it tends to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

He lost to every decent team he played, normally in a "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" fashion. His press conferences were soundbites with no real information given. Excuses were rampant. Coaching skills sub-par. Assistants hampered by his "system." Recruitment was a paper tiger (he would literally lobby recruiting sites to bump his recruits up to look better. His best class has 32 commits and I believe that only 6 of them ended up contributing in any meaningful way (the rest were dismissed or transferred). Development hardly existed. Players would often have their best season their freshman year, and then disappear once they got some "coaching" If a reporter wrote a negative story about him or the program, he would blackball them. If he hadn't lucked into Dobbs (due to Worley's injury) he wouldn't have lasted more than 3 years. Even with his lack of NCAA sanctions, he left the program in a worse shape than he found it. Not to mention, every other fanbase on this site would not shut up about the Sgt Carter looking, trumpet playing dyke who was our coach.

At least Kiffin has a personality and has expressed some remorse.

should have went after Tressel hard . Sad to see a kind of once proud program crumble into an also-ran . In reality though , outside of Fullmer era ...Tennessee has been a barely above avg program ...even with Johnny Majors

You said frick Butch because after he was run off by the Vol higher ups went to work for Saban”
But when Lane K went to work for Saban, well that’s ok.
Explain the reasoning behind this ?

It's not like TN was gonna be able to make a good hire. Your program is already a shite show - and this is before the NCAA hammers your arse. This hire is basically for anyone that wants to suffer through the upcoming sanctions and collect a paycheck. In 4 years, you'll be able to try to get a decent HC - instead of a coach that was about to get fired from UCF.

For the 2 million dollar AD not to panic and just make Steele the interim if he couldn't land a proven head coach. This hire didn't have to be made in 2021

According to Chris Low, here's the list of coaches who rejected Tennessee.

James Franklin, Penn State
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati
Sonny Dykes, SMU
PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Tony Elliot, Clemson (OC)

You're a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

First of all, no, he didn't lose "to every decent team he played." 2015 Georgia was a good team at 10-3. 2016 Florida was a damn good team at 9-4 and the East champions, and Butch beat them by 10. He led national champions Alabama with 3:00 left in Tuscaloosa.

"Coaching skills sub-par. Assistants hampered by his "system." So that justifies the pure hatred in your post that's typical of virtually every Vol fan? Having sub-par skills? Seriously?

"Not to mention, every other fanbase on this site would not shut up about the Sgt Carter looking, trumpet playing dyke who was our coach." Yeah, that's right. But not because of Jones. It was because of Tennessee and the pure disgust we all have toward the Vols. We knew how much it would get under your skin...as you have proven that it did. So you hate Jones so much because of all the shite we talked. Nice.

"then goes to work for your biggest rival while still getting paid millions by you," And, pray tell, whose fault was it that you were paying him millions to work for us? You hate Jones because your athletic department was run by idiots?

"and then celebrates the next by smoking a cigar after thoroughly dismantling a team that he recruited and built, it tends to leave a bad taste in your mouth."

Tough shite. You know how you keep that from happening? Don't fire him, and then he'd have been in your locker room.

You guys don't deserve to have a successful coach.

"At least Kiffin has a personality and has expressed some remorse."

Now that's real comedy.

The overreaction to hires both positive and negative are amazing to watch. If he’s unsuccessful it will likely be due to incoming sanctions. This is a mike Shula type hire which is needed. All you were ever going to get at this point was a coach who wanted an opportunity to prove himself at a higher level of competition. You’re not signing a big name with the situation at TN right now.
