College basketball got better when the playoffs expanded. The only garbage is the officiating. I think college football can thrive if we can get rid of the latter.

I’m old and I like it.

Conference championship games are a waste of time and an opportunity for a good team to suffer by playing in it.

Yesterday with top 5 teams getting beat was fantastic.

24 team playoff is better than 12. It’s really a play in game and then a 16 team playoff.

Hated how a single loss made the season a bit of a downer.

On the other hand the players need to be under contract. Pretending they are students is stupid.

I don't see this at all. SEC teams were running defenses 15 years ago that NFL teams would struggle to run today.

Even dumbed down, players are just running all of the field like idiots. Seems like every team looks the same at times

Players for the most part are just mercenaries. The days before the playoffs were great. The great fight and debate over who was number one was fun. Then came the playoffs. This will settle the debate and bias for sure!Oops. Now teams 5-7 gripe and complain on being left out. Now bowl games are meaningless. A non playoff sugar, fiesta, orange or rose? You had players opt out. Before that you celebrated all night having your team invited to a New years bowl. So then comes NIL which just made players mercenaries and entitled, the expanded playoffs which puts in teams like James Madison, exposes players to more injuries, and waters down the regular season. It was supposed to settle the tired debate of teams left out. Yeah right. Then comes along the super conferences. Rivalries that dated back many decades were destroyed. It was a great move according to ESPN and the networks. Don’t like it? TS they said. Now coming to a town near you will be the 24 team playoff! Woo hoo! Watered down games, blowouts and injuries? Who cares? Money to be made as if they aren’t making it enough but ESPN needs to be bailed out somehow right? Can’t have that Disney stock price stagnant. Games should end with thanks for coming out and drive safely to the ATM.

You are not comparing to the teams from the 60s with 200 pound OL and DL. Early 2000s to 80s would include guys like Tom Brady, Ed Reed, Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, Calvin Johnson, Peyton manning, Jamal Lewis, Shaun Alexander and countless others. Those guys would all be dominant players today. You don’t think 2002 Miami could compete today?
We have been numerous examples of NFL coaches and players lamenting how ill prepared college guys are coming to the league. The coaching job may be harder with all the circumstances, but the on field product isn’t generally better. All the things you mentioned support the idea that the game has become simpler. Teaching schemes to a constantly changing roster results in dumbed down systems and peers who are less prepared. That was pretty much my point. I didn’t argue good or bad, or that coaches had it easier or harder. Look at the quote that you yourself highlighted.

quote:

scheme and system overcome cheap shots

I have no idea what you mean with that line, but talking about review, it is missing on some calls and fixing some others. Sometimes review is just a free timeout to address something fairly inconsequential. Sometimes it is absolutely baffling how the review guys come to the conclusion they do.

There’s always going to be stockpiling of players. Now it’s just going to be focused on who is willing to outspend everyone else. We have already seen a championship in basketball and football based on this. Outside of Alabama losing, I totally understand how yesterday was a great day of CFB, but it’s not all due to the parity of the NIL era. Wacky years happen; 2007 is the one people often point to, but crazy upsets have been a thing pretty much forever. In the end, it’s going to be the teams who spend the most or have a team of experienced players who win most years. It’s not better or worse, just different.

A bit of post nut clarity?

The game is still the game. The athletes are better, the coaches are better, the game is cleaner. The game before 2001 was a simpler, more enjoyable product. But change happens. You keep up or you fall behind.

The Tennessee roster is a 40,000,000.00 plus team. The Vols were able to get back to a high level of competitiveness quickly because the game changed. We, as fans and the university adapted to the new reality quickly, quicker than most. The trick will be avoiding the letdown.

Bama is a bit behind the curb in the new way the game is played (roster management). They are 5-10 million away in NIL, they made a questionable hire for a coach, and don’t have the money or the vision/mindset to change. Saban should have stayed 2 more years and got them used to the money side of the new game but he didn’t.

Alabama has a more recent playoff victory than Tennessee (who has 0 total), UGA and the majority of the SEC. WTF are you even talking about?

And right now the fact you think there are 24 teams that can win a national championship goes even further to prove how fricking stupid you are.

A shite ton has changed the last 5 years.

For instance, Indiana is the reigning national champion after 50 years of being awful.

There arent 24 teams that can get hot and win it all in the playoffs.....it is for like 12 to 16.

Carry on kiddo.

Anyone complaining about it now is literally just mad that their program cannot hoard all the players and prevent them from leaving. That's literally all that comes down to, there is no other argument.

Yep. And I agree with the premise of this thread. It is better.

Also not surprising that some bammers have blinders on. Desperate to try to cling to any remaining remnants of the bygone Saban dynasty.

I also agree that there are probably about 16 teams capable of going on a run and winning it all. And a 24 team playoff should ensure they all get their shot.

Indiana had a bunch of covid seniors and a highly paid roster. They were #1 going into the playoffs. Their team was older than some NFL teams.

The only real change I've seen is that the regular season doesn't matter much, and teams that don't belong in the playoffs get in. You say 12-16, but seem to ignore the multiple teams in the top12 alone that got blown out in last years playoffs. From mismatches in the bottom few teams like Oregon and Ole Miss benefited from, to Indiana vs a 3 loss Alabama team in a later round.

At the end of the year only a few teams are remotely worthy, and at best you'll have some team with a lot of talent get hot after losing a few games NFL style.

More regular season games matter than ever before.

Miami belonged in the playoffs last year whether you believe it or not. They proved it as the 10th seed.

The year before the expansion, two deserving teams were left out....FSU and UGA.

Reality.

Yup. I'm enjoying the parity. It aint fun watching 3 or 4 teams beat the hell out of everybody. Pretty much every game is a coin toss and I like that.

You don’t believe the athletes are bigger, stronger, faster than they were in the 80s, 90s, early 2000s?

You don’t believe that coaches having to coach schemes and plug and play, teach schemes and systems to 1-3 and done guys is harder than just out talenting teams like they could before? You have to work with little depth, new faces, and constantly adapt like never before. The pressure is higher too?

And the game is no longer a scrum game, scheme and system overcome cheap shots, reviews fix many egregious calls, it’s no longer just about the helmet now.

All of this was true before 2023. It's now going in the other direction.

Fundamentals will eventually come back in vogue. This I believe is why Kirby Smart is so successful. He's never left fundamentals even when everyone was criticizing him for his 50's offense.

We're seeing now that these OC's can't get their kids to play these advanced schemes like they were from 2007 to 2023. They'll be back to possession football eventually.

Kirby is a great coach but he could play basic offense because UGA could hoard players. NIL and portal has ended the hoarding of superior talent.

You cant beat them up and win with depth anymore.

And offensive schemes have been simplified going on a decade now. All these RPO packages you see every weekend are just the most basic of reads. As simple as an old wing t high school offense from the 80s almost.

It isn't going back to what it once was ever again.

The playoffs are just a tournament where path and getting hot at the right time matters more than anything else.
