If you didn't go buy some stocks while that mess was down, you were paying attention to all the wrong things. This Kung Flu isn't even as bad as the normal flu.

And does any RATIONAL individual in their right mind think the death rates in the US are gonna be the same as China???
WHO? Another joke of an organization.

Every other developed country has universal healthcare and paid sick leave. We have a large population of people who have no healthcare.
How long does it take to get seen in these countries? What is the quality of their medical care? How much do they pay in taxes? What is their general quality of life in comparison? How much do they pay in taxes for all these "benefits." Why do people from all over the world come to the United States for medical care? Also, take a minute and think about where this virus is spreading the quickest and why.

What a horrible thing to say

Wow... out of all the dumb frickers on this board, you might be the dumbest one. Slack is right behind you.

Damn we have a lot of doctors on this board
Why does everyone hate being proactive instead of reactive? How many deaths are needed before it’s taken seriously?
Right now it’s mostly elders and those with underlying conditions, but we don’t know shite about this virus like we do influenza. And viruses mutate.
I don’t think the sky is falling, but concern is warranted. Especially with large gatherings of people.

It's all fun, jokes and games until it's you or one of your family members affected.

FWIW, I'm not a doctor. But I do have my Masters in Biology. During my academic career and beyond, I've taken both Genetics, Microbiology and lots of other related courses.
The problem with this thinking is only 1 individual virus will mutate (and they do all the time). These mutations create a new strain that may be more or less lethal. It's not like the "Andromeda Strain" where the entire virus population mutated to a less than lethal variant. That's impossible because there would be no way all of the viruses could exchange their genetic material (RNA in the case of coronoavirus) once they are outside of the host.

This isn’t really disproving what I said. Just because it’s called something different doesn’t mean anything. It can still mutate to be more lethal. There’s always a chance.
The main point is we don’t know shite about it. Again, I definitely think it’s been overhyped. But we can’t just shrug it off because other scares turned out to be nothing.
It’s not a big deal until it is.

Yes, but the vast majority of the virus circulating will be the primary strain with all the characteristics that we are currently seeing.
As you said, we don't know that much about this virus (yet), but likely it's less lethal than the 2-3% number that is being reported. With symptoms that mimic the common cold/Flu, my best guess is it's more prevalent in the population than we know. Case in point, we've seen many asymptomatic people get diagnosed in the past few weeks. The most likely scenario is that as it spreads globally, more and more people will be exposed to, and contract COVID-19, develop antibodies to it, and it's prevalence in the human population will diminish.

I agree. And the same type of people that are at high risk of lethality from the flu will likely be the same for covid19.
I just hate the extremes for both sides. Instead of “oh it’s nothing” or “oh my god the world is ending”, let’s just wash our hands and cough into our chicken wings and not be gross.

Correct.60 million cases and 12,000 deaths in the US and the govt was far less proactive in '09.
