Someone from Birmingham calling Baton Rouge a shithole.

OMfrickingG

Baton Rouge, the largest city in Louisiana - has more public and municipal parks, museums, art galleries, golf courses, gated communities, theatres, fine dining establishments, convention centers and community events/fairs/celebrations, and entertainments venues than you can shake a red stick at.

I retired in 2013 and left ATL for Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge, like every city, has poor areas but is generally a great place to live. People who think BR is a craphole have not lived here for any period of time.

You must have spent all your time 4 blocks north of campus?

Think about working for people who have the mindset of "t.u. t.u. t.u., herp derp," "We Rule This State!," "SEC SEC we're now better than you," in other words, a massive inferiority complex that colors every decision they make.

Think about working for some prick with the mindset of the Army Lobotomy guy, or Daniel the Racist.

Any questions?

To answer your original question the answer is Woodward has a good amount of family in Baton Rouge. Specifically elderly parents that don't have so many years left on this world. My bet is that was one of the larger factors in his decision to leave CS for BR.

That being said, unless you're on campus there isn't too much going on the Bryan/College-Station area outside of the college and bar scene. A ton of residence without too much industry or major business as the majority of the population is going to school.

Hope that helps.

Shithole Prairie is good.

I like Malfunction Junction, too.

It's been a while so I assume things there have improved, but back in the Harvey Williams' days...he was from that area... the DQ was a hot spot to go to. Just saying.

All of which is true.

However, it doesn't change the fact that the very name "College Station" for that place (and yes, been there several times) makes as much sense as naming that big iceberg "Greenland."

I'm assuming you don't know the origin of the name but back when A&M was first starting up (1876 or so), all the town had was a train stop and a University. Thus it was dubbed College Station by the train system. I guess no one felt entitled enough to update the town's name since. You know, Aggies and traditions and all that.

I've never been to Fred's but I was never a huge fan of a The Chicken so you'll get no argument from me.

The Chicken is the oldest/most historic bar, baw. Not where all the students go. Northgate > Tigerland, but we don't have anything that competes with free drink Fridays at Fred's.

Birmingham is a legitimately decent place to live. I'm not sure many would say the same about BR.

BR is more interesting than Birmingham, though.

I was in Detroit this January. I promise you it is not nicer than BR. Not even as nice.
Just in case, I was in BR in February.
