How miserable of a place is College Station?

I've never been to College Station, but what would make someone want to leave for Baton Rouge? I've been to Baton Rouge and it's a shite hole. Plus the AD's job at College Station was on cruise control. He had Jimbo and Buzz in their two biggest sports. Now he's at LSU with a head football coach that probably won't ever beat Saban or win the SEC West title. Plus a college basketball coach whose job is in limbo pending the FBI / NCAA. That's a lot of stress for someone to take on. At A&M you don't have to worry about winning championships. Just finish in the middle of the pack and you're good. Plus they have an endless supply of cash.

Does living in College Station really suck that bad?

It can't be that bad, can it? I bet there are some fun things to looks at and a place to shower.

It was so bad that the AD jumped without a real negotiation.

I'll take whatever contract he had, if I can just leave when it gets bad. Haha

It’s in the middle of nowhere on completely flat ground.

Here’s a gem from Aggy 247. Nice to see a dose of a reality.

Texas A&M has been and alway will be a second tier university in perception. Unless they are home grown, then A&M is not a destination but a stopover. Compare College Station to any other top tier university city. It is lacking. There is a reason they say Hwy 6 goes both ways because I wanted out as soon as possible Now, I am proud to be a former student but no matter how much A&M throws money around, the perception is it is a hick school by the outside, Just look to Austin, Norman which is basically a suburb of OKC, and even Columbus, OH as great locations. A&M is hindered by geography, a sub-standard airport and it is just a boring town. This is a realism we all ignore. This is why A&M is just a stop-over.

Detroit is currently nicer than Baton Rouge. That is not hyperbole.

The only input I have is someone that jumped at the first chance to leave College Station for a shite hole.

The SEC Rant swears that a mile on each side of I-10 is all of Baton Rouge.

It's not miserable, it's just bland and boring.

Think of a mediocre builder grade new construction home, cookie cutter, unobjectionable but without any charm whatsoever. That's College Station.

Whether that's less attractive than BR is another matter, though.

I have been to Detroit and Baton Rouge. Detroit is getting a lot nicer...Baton Rouge is getting worse.

I have lived on the MS Gulf Coast and then moved to a similar sized town in TX. I'll tell you, it's a culture shock. BR has rougher areas than CS, but also has many more upscale areas. For example, in BR you can shop for anything you want, and not just everything you "need," which usually means bare bones. BR has plenty more bars, restaurants, areas for concerts, etc.

BR is also an hour from New Orleans, and for me, less than 2 hours from the MS gulf coast. There is obviously plenty of hunting in CS, but you have that near BR, as well. You get a little more fishing opportunity in BR. I would say anyone who is from neither BR or CS would find more to what they want in BR. CS is closer comparison to the surrounding cities around BR, than BR.

However, there is always no place like home.

To be honest, I didn’t read anything after your admission that you’ve never been, and I appreciate the self burn

I love college station and enjoyed living in Baton Rouge. If you can’t have a good time in either as a student, you are the problem, and there’s plenty of hoity toity establishments in both for administration.
