How many programs are capable of winning an SEC title in the new SEC?

Here are my thoughts:

Incapable: Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Let’s face it, these programs have zero shot to win the SEC. Vandy hasn’t ever won one in the league’s 90-year existence. Kentucky has one title that was won retroactively due to a team having to forfeit a game back when the SEC only had 10 teams and you could tie for the title… as they did in 1976 with Georgia.

Highly Unlikely To Ever Have a Chance: Miss St, Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina

Miss St hasn’t won one since 1941 and has really never come close. 1998 was probably the closest.

Missouri had their best shot those first two seasons they were in the SEC. The East was extremely weak and they at least could take advantage of that. With the divisions going away, their future chances are close to zero.

Arkansas- They took advantage of a vey week Western division in 1995, 2002, and 2006 but were whipped in Atlanta by double digits all three times, by an average loss by 23 points. If Arkansas can’t win one in 30 years with just 12 teams and divisions, they aren’t likely to win one going forward.

Ole Miss- no coach since Johnny Vaught has ever come close. Not likely going to ever happen.

South Carolina- if there is one program in this group that might have the best shot, it’s South Carolina. Why? Demographics. They are in a state that is exploding in population and also border fast-growing Georgia and South Carolina. As the ACC falls behind in revenue, South Carolina is likely to benefit more than any single program in the coming years. It is still a steep, uphill climb.

Likely at some Point but Hard to Come By: Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida, Texas

A&M has the resources. They’ve got the facilities. It will come one day but I think it’s a once in 30 years type of thing.

Tennessee and Florida- I lump these together because they have similar outlooks. Neither team has won the SEC since Saban won his first SEC title. They’ve had the hardest time adjusting in the new era of college football that Saban brought to the league. I think they are certainly capable, but we’re not in the 1990s anymore and a once every 15-20 years is probably the best these can hope for.

Texas- They’ve struggled to win titles in the Big12. Jury is out on if they can do it in the SEC.

Most Likely to Win: Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Oklahoma

Bama, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn are responsible for the past 14 SEC Titles, and all have won multiple since any other program has won one. These programs are built for the new era.

Oklahoma has dominated the Big 12. They are a blue blood. I think there could be an adjustment period, but I expect them to win the SEC before some of these others get their first.

Not sure how AU is on a higher tier than Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.

I would agree with this. Hell Tennessee might win it this year.

Hard to disagree. Not sure how Auburn is looped in with the other four most likely to win, though.

Tennessee hasn’t won the SEC since 1998. Florida hasn’t won since 2008.

They’ve failed to keep up in the Saban/Kirby era. Auburn may have had a rough couple years under Harsin, but we’ve proven we can compete with the current big dogs.

2010 National Champs- standing in the way of a Bama 4-peat

2013 National Runner-up

2017 SEC West Champs- beat the National Champs and the National Runner-up in the process.

The Vols and the Gators have done nothing close since Saban changed the game.

Study your history before you walk in the front door…. We compete for the SEC every few seasons and have so for 40+ years

It was forever ago but Kentucky did win the SEC outright underr Coach Bryant in 1950:

"Bryant, who played end at Alabama, opposite of Hall of Famer Don Hutson, served as the Wildcats head coach between 1946-53, leading Kentucky to its only outright SEC championship in 1950. Kentucky was also crowned as national champions that year by Sagarin Ratings. The Wildcats went 10-1 and beat Oklahoma, 13-7, in the Sugar Bowl. Their only loss came to the Vols that season, with UT prevailing, 7-0."

Auburn has won the SEC 7 times since 1983.

UGA has 4 in that timeframe.

LSU has 7.

Tennessee has 5.

Is this about history or about the present and future? The title literally says “new SEC”

If you think adding Texas and Okl. is going to drastically change the SEC, you are in for a rude awakening.

Auburn has a better head coach than Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.

Most of this stuff is top down.
Saban. Kirby. Stoops.
Who is at the top matters.

OU has never beaten an SEC team for a NC or playoff game

OU relies on the state of Texas for their recruits and the State of Texas has only won 1 NC since 1970

OU has only won 4 during that time, none since 2000

Without their easy conference games, OU will flounder in the SEC. They are headed the way of Nebraska.

I expect them to be a middle of the road team

Oklahoma is about to get a reality check without a shite schedule every year.

Think Nebraska and the Big10

The only way I see Auburn clawing its way back to the upper echelon is Saban retiring, and Alabama whiffing on his replacement. Oh, and Freeze has to end up being an excellent hire.

It's all plausible. It might all play out that way. But that's what has to happen for Auburn to get back into the top tier. And it has to happen pretty fast.

Auburn won a NC and played for another while saban has been at bama.

ETA very few schools have had the success Auburn has had against saban. Auburn made a bad hire. That put us in a hole. However, it is not a hole we can't dig out of.

And yall fired the two people who accomplished that.

This is why you don't have nice things right now.
