Texas legalized to go alcohol because of covid, so you should be seeing many more places selling drinks to go.

Not 3.2 anymore in Oklahoma. We have real stuff now!

Norman is sort of like Tuscaloosa with smaller trees. (That will make sense once you've been to both)
Sonic is an Okie company, they're literally everywhere. The HQ is 15 minutes away from Norman in downtown OKC.
There's tailgating and campus corner is in walking distance. (Food and more beer)
We could do a lot more honestly and probably will. OU never has had to keep up with/compete with other schools game day atmospheres like what the SEC has.

No tailgating by the stadium anymore because of security issues. Lame.

We have always had a large tailgating scene and it's pretty much everywhere around, and on, the campus.

Texas tailgaiting and pregame set up is sterile compared to what the SEC is accumstomed to. New AD has made some moves to address that, but that scene will never be an attraction in Austin.

Texas tailgating is a little different and spread out to many different areas around the stadium. You're in the middle of downtown Austin but there are some great sponsored tailgates as well as fan tailgates to attend.
Their tailgates are catered with very little action happening between different tailgate parties. Great for business contacts but boring compared to most SEC and OK tailgates.
It’s The Grove without the Grove and with plastic utensils.

yall are hemmed in by the city. I say with no malice that I think texas will easily have the worst tailgating of all.

I have gone to several games since A&M left and just wear neutral colors as I have a lot of friends that are sips living in Austin last one was 2 years ago.
You have to remember that a lot of the draw for Texas is they are the NFL team for Austin. The only other pro sports are Minor League Baseball, Minor League Hockey, and MLS in a Metro of 2 million plus and growing.
It's a huge source of the money Texas has but it also makes it feel like going to an NFL game. Many companies in Austin sponsor tailgates (my old company did and none of the leadership even went to Texas) and they feel exactly like what you think a corporate sponsored tailgate would feel like. Some cool toys but very little emotion, it's a social/business event.
Game atmosphere has a lot of the same issues though I hear they have tried to make it better. LOTS of commercials and sponsorship signs everywhere. Lots of "Official Toilet Paper of the University of Texas" or whatever crap. I think the stadium/field is named after half a dozen folks now.
I mean its a good time but just imagine you are going to a Falcons or Saints game or something but the fans are probably less rabid.

I went to a UTA game when they were played K-State like 4 years ago.
In short, it's not very good. Really spread out in random parking lots - commuter school vibe.

When I first moved to Norman, I had to stop drinking beer for a while because it was so weak. Just got full without the buzz. I've lived in both Tuscaloosa and Norman. Norman is a much nicer town but I like the Bama campus better. It has come a long way.

Texas' campus is locked in an urban area. People have to find parking lots to tailgate. Relatively speaking, it's not good.
That said, most visiting fans will tell you that the hospitality was great. I think most honest LSU fans will tell you they were treated with respect in Austin.

What is in the old O'Connells location now? That corner was where it was happening. St Patrick's Day there was a blast.

quote:unless you’re an Aggie fan. Y’all treat us like shite. It’s a miserable fricking game to experience. If you’re an A&M fan, you get into town, park in some random parking garage, walk to the stadium through the dirty city while getting heckled and abused. Go to the game, then get the frick out of town as quickly as possible. Sucks that we have to go back to it, and another reason this whole thing blows.

I know your response will be “no shite, aggy. frick you.” Again, it SUCKS for A&M that we have to go back. Not how college football should be. Even LSU appreciates having visitors.

I agree with this, the Longhorns I met were nice for the most part but the tailgating sucks. You're better off bar hopping downtown before a game.

Regardless of what you call them, these are not tailgates. They're corporate happy hours and networking events that are scheduled prior to a football.
It's not that UT has a tailgating scene that is "a little different", it's that UT does not have a tailgating scene at all. That's the reality.

While Boren was president at OU, his wife almost killed a lot of things, including good tailgating. It has been slowly coming back, but has a ways to go.
My son graduated from aTm, and I can tell you that before moving to the SEC, they had zilch. Along with tailgating they added mythical conference championships, one in which they lost the game and another they didn't even attend.
70% of OU's games the last several seasons have been at 11:00, because they have been the only team in the conference that could get consistent viewers to the game. That is a huge sore point for OU. aTm fans may not remember after 77-0
I look for the SEC transition to re-ignite Sooner tailgating. "OCommell's Irish Pub and Grille is in the area called Campus Corner. Still rocks St Patrick's day. I have not lived in OK since mid 70s. Had season tickets for 20 years, starting the year after son graduated from aTm.
Will go back to see friends for our yearly game, this year and can give you a better idea then. I would not guess post-covid. Moved to AZ this last Fall, to be within block of grandkids
