Matt Luke is out as the coach of Ole Miss and a number of Rebels players apparently aren't happy about it -- to the point where they'd consider leaving the program. How many would follow through is anyone's guess. Emotions are high considering Ole Miss just pissed away its last game of the year to Mississippi State and fired its coach within one weekend. Still, one player told Nick Suss of the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger that "half the team" is talking about leaving if the entire coaching staff is dismissed.
Rebels offensive lineman Chandler Tuitt made his comments following a team meeting with athletic director Keith Carter. "But you realize, there's no program without players," Tuitt said. "You're basing stuff off the fans. But we don't care about the fans that much. I'm going to be honest. We're here for the coach. We love football. If you don't want to support us, that's just your fault."
Center Eli Johnson added that he will be returning to Ole Miss next season, and that some teammates feel the same, but others would be willing to walk.
"But that's not the case with a lot of guys. A lot of guys came to school here because of coach Luke," Johnson said. "They don't have any ties to Ole Miss football. That's what scares me is how are those guys going to respond to this?"

I don’t understand why they love Luke so much. I get loving your coach and all but seems a little dramatic.

...More than half the team reconsiders transferring after learning that no one else wants them.

Sounds like the biggest recruiting challenge for the new coach is holding on to what he's got. However, I think most of the players might find that their options are few unless they want to drop down to FCS level. I doubt Ealy or Plumlee would leave as they are supposed to play baseball, too. Other than those two, who do they have that could start at another P5 school right out of the chute?

Is it really a loss if your team and personnel suck?

I completely understand where the players are coming from.

However; college players cant have their cake and eat it too. If you want to push to compensate college players, that money is going to ultimately come from the fans. Ticket and concession sales and TV viewership.

The players may not care what the fans want, but the programs budget sure does. At some universities, if the booster money dries up there is no football program.

LOL! We know there’s not a player on the roster good enough to start at that juggernaut in Starkville

Wish these pussies would leave already. I understand playing for and loving your coach but grow the frick up dude. Luke sucked and he lucked his way into a HC gig at an sec school.
If you cared about him so much why the frick didn’t you do the one thing that’d make him stay—win ball games? Exactly.

They, like the boosters and DK + others a few years ago, only want(ed) Luke to stay so they can continue doing things that they want. The players were able to do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted.

I’m not sure what the outside perspective is, but in talking to a few friends inside the team it’s clear that the players were given free will and walked all over Luke. I suspect most of these players now realize they won’t be able to do that with a new coach, and that’s why they’re so upset.

Don't care. frick them. If they want to transfer because we fired a shite head coach, let them. Kids threatening to transfer was the reason Luke was hired in the first place.

6-6, 5-7, 4-8

Average attendance below 50k

Donations are hilariously low because of Luke

I don't care if they all transfer, any smart Ole Miss fan won't regret this

While that's true, this will be hell to dig out of. You thought it was bad with the sanctions and Luke as HC, it could be worse. The roster already isn't very good and if a bunch of them leave it's only going to get worse. There aren't blue chippers beating down the door to play there.

I guess that’s kinda like us wondering how our quirky head coach gets his players to always fight hard for him in games even though he has some inept offensive game plans.

They also can't recruit more than 25 players a year. Period. Can we say preferred walk-on?

Eligibility issues are waived when a coach is fired, they can all leave and play right away.

All things considered, I thought Matt Luke did a fine job there. He hired a really good staff and had some good recruiting momentum. The future looked pretty bright with that stud quarterback they've got. Really puzzled by this firing.
