To be fair, a lot teams had trouble beating Spurrier. Florida practically dominated the SEC during the 90’s.

Steve Spurrier has to live with the fact that Mike Dubose beat him twice in one season.

Well done
Best Gene Stallings quote--When you start listening to the fans you will soon find yourself sitting with them.

I also agree that as good as Saban is, Bear is the GOAT. NOBODY but Bryant could have defeated that 1978 Penn St team

In the late 90's there was local show on a station called CSPN in Bessemer and Gene had a part every week. He would not go over offense but defense and how to stop certain plays He was a damn master of defensive football.

He literally won the first SEC championship game by beating Florida and Spurrier 28-21 and then ran Miami off the field to win a National Championship. Even though everyone said Alabama didn’t have enough offense to beat Miami.

He did lose the next to Spurrier. The 1994 SEC Championship game, losing to Florida 24-23, cost Alabama a chance to play for a national championship.

If Sorensen and Bockrath and stupid arse fans like the “he should open up the offense so he can beat Spurrier” didn’t run him off, Alabama would have avoided the Shula/Dubose era. In his last six seasons Stallings won one national championship, won the west 3 times, and went 1-2 versus Spurrier. He was 5-1 in bowl games.

But complete dipshits forced him to resign looking for “better”.

I am 100x more pissed about it today than I was then. I don’t know if Bockrath and Sorenson are still alive. But it they are they should start every day by being beaten with a pillow case full of padlocks and rusty lag bolts.

Great man!

I hate Bama hired Bob Backrath. How much of a douche can you be to make Stallings say "frick this" and resign. He was a Junction Boy

He runs off Stallings and hires DuBose. Genius! Hard to imagine why his arse went packing himself so quickly.

Bama won the first SECCG on a pick six. The Defensive plan for the Sugar Bowl that year May have been the most brilliant game plan ever created. Bama got a score or two on defense in that game.

Stallings was a damn good coach. I never said he wasn’t. To beat Florida back then it was pretty clear that Bama could not just count on running the ball and playing great defense. Florida was gonna score at least 21-24 points back then no matter how good the defense was for Bama. The game was starting to change then. Stallings just refused to change with the times. He tried to open up a little when he hired Homer Smith but he really never bought in enough to make any adjustments in his style of coaching. It wouldn’t have take much. I never expected him to adopt the run and shoot. All he really needed to do is open it up just enough to put up another TD or two against teams like UF that scored a lot.

And here is one of those fans that just wanted better and contributed to Stallings leaving.

That worked out great.

Glad to hear you Gumps say he is great person, that’s 1000 times more impressive the public will never understand how hard it is to be a great person and great at any job, much less coaching football a college football team.

Stallings helped a lot of families that had kids with disabilities during and after his coaching career. One family was from my hometown, and they were having trouble coming to terms with the prospects of life with a newborn with down syndrome. He reached out to them several times, during football season while he was coaching at Alabama and helped them to see the good in their situation.

John Mark deserves a statue next to his father.

That’s great to hear, I always liked him for some reason he just seemed sincere.

Plus every Southerner on the planet was pulling for him to bear Miami in the Sugar bowl that year

He was 1-5 against the old ball coach. Won in 92. Lost in 90, 91, 93, 94 and 96. Still a great coach and man!

I have always said the Bear was the GOAT, and a good guy. Gene Stalling is a very underrated coach at Bama.

I believe Stallings actually gets a little more love than he should as a coach because people respect him as a genuine person who's done a lot of good in the world and was a great father to a son with special needs.

Stallings had a great tenure at Bama, but the timing of his hiring and resignation was favorable. If he had been hired a little sooner or stayed a little later, I think it would have been more difficult for him.

1. A lot of the key pieces of the 1992 national championship team were young players on the roster when he was hired.

2. Auburn quickly slipped into mediocrity in the early '90s after its strong '80s run, making it easier to score a few quick Iron Bowl victories out of the gate. Bill Curry coached against a hell of a lot better Auburn teams in his first three (and only three) years, including the first game at JHS.

3. If Stallings had stayed past 1996 - he was only 61 when he retired - I doubt his tenure would have ended on a high note. Spurrier had his number and Tennessee had taken control of the series with Manning, Martin, Lewis and those guys. I think a few more years in the saddle would have diluted the impact the 1992 championship has on his legacy and fewer people would remember him as a "great coach" as Bama became no better than the third best program in the SEC for a prolonged period of time.

4. His stints at A&M and with the Cardinals were abysmal.

Coached the St. Louis Cardinals. Not very successful there, but not his fault. Bidwell was a terrible owner.

Gene Stallings was so good of a coach that he won a NC with Jay Barker as QB.

My favorite Stallings quote was in response to a reporter who asked him about the lofty expectations at Bama. Stallings replied with this question, “What’s wrong with expecting excellence?”

And all-time great defense, an electric return guy, a reliable FG kicker, and a couple of RB’s at least good enough to get some snaps with the Cowboys in their early/mid-90s prime.

Those are the guys who beat Miami.

You could hide a bad QB in those days if you were great elsewhere. Hard to do it now.
