Absolutely terrible. The currents and water have been very rough this past 2 weeks.

Prayers to his family.

This is very sad and should be a lesson for all. Those red flags are the real deal. For anyone that hasn’t been caught in a rip it’s not pleasant and obviously can be deadly.

Never let your kids in the water when the rip is vicious.

Local news in Mobile just said he did NOT get caught in a rip current and called it a “tragic accident”

This. The people making these flag conditions do this for their salary and want people to be safe while having fun.

It was a yellow flag and the water was relatively calm. We were less than a mile from where it happened. I know rip currents can happen near sandbars, but not sure of cause here.

Regardless of the circumstances leading to his drowning, truly a heartbreaking situation

Hate it for his family...and for the kids he was coaching. They only had 1 season with him, and now he's gone. Truly tragic.

I've got three. (6, 4, & 9mo) When we were at gulf shores, I just had a bad feeling about the water and was really glad when my kiddos preferred the pool.

I thought Ryan Mallet was the right QB to put Petrino's offense on the map. That trip to Fayetteville in 2010 against #10 Hogs was a wing-banger. Down by 17 and Mallet throwing the ball all over the field BAMA was getting mighty close to a near-death experience. Maybe the best offense in balance and talent of the Petrino era.

Life is short enough without all these unforeseen events taking life way too early.
