This should be posted at beaches

It is. You can’t swing a dead cat in Orange Beach without hitting a sign telling you what to do if caught in a rip current. In beach parking lots, on beaches, in some stores, at condos and hotels. They have signs on how to identify rip currents, and what to do if caught in one. I bet it is the same in Pensacola Beach, Destin, and PCB. Most people just ignore it or think it won’t happen to them. Relax, don’t panic, swim parallel to the beach until out of the current, and then let the waves push you back in. And never try to rescue someone else without a float or a board.

Double red flags come out in GS, so do the surf boards.

Even if you don't have social media it's not that hard to get beach flag info, its literally everywhere.

Hell of a competitor. Saw him play at Auburn in 2010 in an epic 65-43 game that was back and forth until the very end. Very sad for his family and the Hog nation. Woo Pig!!

If you actually go to the beach, you can’t miss them as they are everywhere. If you don’t want to crane your head up to look at the flag flying above you, the info is also available online. They make it hard to miss.

It isn’t that people don’t see the flags. It is that they are at the beach for their one week of the year and no stupid flag is going to interfere with their vacation. Plus, it would never happen to them.

Wow. That's terrible. Lived in Texarkana and watched several of his games in high school. Had one of the strongest arms for a youngster I can ever remember watching. Was always nice and cordial every time he spoke to me or my family. Sad, sad day.

I just read the update the Sheriffs department is mad at beach goers for ignoring the flags.

I think it’s definitely a case of ignorance instead of total recklessness. They don’t know what a rip tide is. They think the warnings are just for generally rough surf which they assume they can simply see coming and avoid.
Like I said earlier, I was on the exact beach the day before this happened, and I had been there for 4 total days, 3 nights. I don’t know how long Mallett had already been at this beach but it’s very possible he could’ve been there the same time as me.

The first day we got there it was double red flag and there were plenty of people at the beach but NO ONE was in the water. The second day it was one red flag in the morning, then yellow in the evening. I don’t recall seeing anyone out on the sandbar that day either, just a few people no further than 20 yards out from the shore. The day after that it was pretty calm, yellow flags and also the next day. There were plenty of beach goers including myself out in the sandbar. The sandbar was calm, clear, and a lot like crab island. The day I left it began to get rough again, and yesterday when this happened I wasn’t there at all.

The point is, everyone that I saw on the beach had been heeding warnings and was being generally cautious. I didn’t see any groups while I was there going out when they shouldn’t.

I saw this last night, and am just coming on to post about it. I loved watching him play...especially since my team didn't have to face him. I always thought he was one of the most underrated QBs to come out of the SEC. I'm truly saddened by his passing and my condolences go out to the Arkansas fanbase.

Regardless of the circumstances leading to his drowning, truly a heartbreaking situation

Terrible to hear.

Was one of the great Hog players. Always pulled for him at the college level and at the NFL level. Seemed like a very likeable guy, never heard of anyone who knew him or met him ever say a single bad thing about him.

Way too young to die especially like this. God be with his family and friends.

RIP, Coach Mallett.

Don't panic because it can't suck you under...just takes you out farther. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you escape the rip channel then continue swimming away from the channel and into the shoreline.
i think the thought of being taken out farther is what causes the panic to be fair.
