It's been the most visible trophy awarded during the BCS and Bowl Coalition eras. And while still awarded, it has been supplanted by the CFB Playoff trophy as the main trophy. Which is why you see the 2 on the end.
You're seeing 92, 09, 11, 12, 15, 17.
There really wasn't a main trophy awarded before then because there are several that are awarded to the winner each year.
I personally like the MacArthur Bowl as it's just like the Stanley Cup, there's only one and the winner keeps it an entire year with the team engraved on it and then it goes to the next winner.
