Yea, I gotta say, that is a pretty embarassing look for a metric.

If your metric spits that out......might be time to take another look at it

I just pulled up the FINAL ESPN FPI for 2019, and here is what it looks like:

I assume if Joe Burrow and the dozen or so LSU players that are going to be in the NFL draft could still play in 2020 this would be a lot different.

I'm actually surprised Oklahoma is so high considering they lost half their offense and will be starting a Freshman QB most likely.

LSU, with those players, had just finished dismantling Clemson when the ESPN FPI ranked that team 4th. That was the first time people started pointing out what a joke their metric is.

Having Texas A&M in the top 10 going into 2020 will just cement that opinion.

The 'credibility' of that 'poll' was effectively shot down with the final 2019 ranking !
Case closed !

That ranking is a joke and a bad one at that. Texas, are you serious? I guess Oklahoma will find a defense between now and the fall. Wisconsin is a pretty good team but they don't have the studs to play at top ten level. I don't think Penn St does either. I don't believe LSU is going to fall off the earth. At least they did not stick two PAC teams in their top ten.

If the FPI produces that ranking based on actual results, imagine how unreliable the early preseason ranking is?

I can't wait until these numbers are revised to reflect spring game attendance.

6) Wisconsin

only school on the list without a top 10 recruiting class in the last 3 years. Their best rated class is 2020 at 25th, with 2019 being 29th. big10 west is fraudulence.

What methhead put AM and Georgia above LSU?
Also LoL at Kill-a-studentU and Shitty Penn State on that list at all.
Imagine being a fan of those two deplorable schools.

That was the 2019 preseason ranking, not the final one. That's actually pretty damn good. Clemson got in. It thought both the SEC East and the SEC West winners would have a good shot at getting in, and that the two teams fighting for the SEC West title (Bama and LSU) were nearly as good as each other. Once the SEC stuff is settled, it has the next playoff team as the Big Ten champ, and if an available spot, the Big 12 champ. It got the Big 12 champ right. Its only real misses were Notre Dame, and picking Michigan to win the Big Ten. But pretty much everyone thought Michigan would win the Big Ten, mainly because there were too many unknowns surrounding Ohio State going into the season.

Of course, the final 2019 ranking still had LSU at #3, behind Ohio State and Clemson. But what apparently no one here understands is that FPI is all about your remaining schedule. So going into the playoff, Ohio State and Clemson were considerably ahead of LSU in FPI, which made sense considering they had a harder schedule going forward. Clemson was guaranteed to play the number 1 team in FPI (Ohio State), and Ohio State was guaranteed to play the number two team in FPI (Clemson). LSU, on the other hand, was guaranteed to play the number nine team in FPI (Oklahoma). It was too big of a gap for LSU to make up going into it. That's obviously an issue with FPI that they should fix. So basically, FPI is pretty good until you get to the playoff.

It doesn't take into account aberrations like LSU 2019.
It's what they call in statistics an outlier. LSU is likely to never come close to 2019.

ESPN's FPI has exactly zero credibility. Indeed, it is the biggest joke in college football.

I personally don't think it's all that odd when such things show teams that lost above a team that beat them. It's not about single games, it's about the entire season.

That said, I personally put 0 stock into FPI as a metric because it has human influences directly put in it's rankings.
