Obviously recruiting is perhaps the most important component of building a champion, but excluding that, who is the better overall head coach?

Gameday coach only - there is an argument for many ahead of Saban, including Mullen.

That isn't how college football works though.

I mean, Saban is what 5-1 in national championship games? Pretty solid gameday coach as well as running the program.

i'm not saying that he is the best, but i think he is better than many on here give him credit for.

Hard to compare them as Xs and Os coaches, considering they're from different sides of the ball. An argument could be made for either.

I'm not saying he isn't, but he is playing with superior talent and depth in every game, so citing his record isn't really saying much.

Saba is the best cfb coach there is. His strength is in recruiting and developing and maintaining a standard of excellence. He is unmatched so far in those aspects. Xs and Os, I think there are other coaches as good or better. Not saying he is a slouch by any measure.

As a state fan I would never ask that or even think it Not even up for discussions. I am 48 and Was alive during a bear Bryant days. There have been really good programs and coaches come and go.

Sabah could be the greatest College coach ever. At least top 5.

I love Mullen and all his swagger etc.. but he hasn't won anything at this point.

When you get to championship games the talent is pretty even except for the 2012 Notre Dame game. I think he is probably a much better game day coach to than people give him credit for. He is not nearly as good as a position coach as people give credit for though.

For all of his love for DBs Bama's secondary is often the weakest link on the whole team more times than not.

he's also 6-1 in SEC championship games. That's 11-2 in championship games. You can't ask for more than that honestly.

Coaching is not just X's and O's.

There are a lot of teams out there that have essentially equal talent as Bama, but don't come close to competing at an elite level on a snap to snap, game to game, season to season, and decade to decade basis.

Saban is the best coach in College football because he can get a group of 5 stars, who are usually prima donna's, and turn them into team players who put in the work for the team and not just themselves. He get's everyone to buy in, and if someone doesn't they gone. He's an A+++ CEO, and maybe an A- football coach.

Saban isn't a once in a lifetime football mind by any means, but he is a once in a lifetime football HEAD Coach, and that's what makes him so great.

Hell, I believe Sumlin is a great Football coach, what he was doing at Houston with little talent was amazing. He can't handle the prima donna's though, that's why they go through more 5 star QB's than Hugh Freeze does hookers. At Houston he had a grinder in Case Keenum with a chip on his shoulder, he wouldn't have even got an invite to A&M's Summer camp out of high school.

I think Mullen has some CEO issues at times, which is evident by the fact that he can't keep a DC for more than a year. He's good with players and doesn't put up with BS, and I'm sure he could win a natty at Bama, but the answer is SABAN.

The answer is always Saban.

Excluding all of that, Saban is by far the best to me at keeping up the intensity. Day to day, game to game, season to season.

He wins the Nat. Championship and will go to work the very next day pissed off like he lost to a FCS team. 100% focused all the time.

Mullen does not have that. I'm not saying he's lax or bad, he just doesn't have that hard core of a drive like Saban.

No one does and I think that's what makes Saban the best in CFB

Totally agree about the NC games. Outside of ND game, its been pretty damn equal talent. 2008 season also merits discussion as Alabama was certainly not an incredibly deep and talented team at that time but went undefeated in regular season and had UF on the ropes in the SEC Championship game until Tebow started Tebowing in the 4th Quarter.

I have trouble saying that in 2009 NC game (and SEC Championship against UF), 2011 NC game and the two Clemson games were noteworthy talent disparities. As well as many of the LSU games over the years, 2012 UGA was a great team.

I guess his system isn't really predicated on "gameday decisions" as much, but there are not a lot of times you can say "wtf was Saban thinking" and rarely do we see clock management issues.

I agree to some extent, that the latter half of the Saban Era until recently missed on a lot of the db's. But that is also Saban's system where db's are asked to do a lot of man coverage and with changes in college offenses db's will get beat. He just sets the defense and if you have a qb that can make awesome throws under pressure, tall receivers who can make tough catches then its going to be a close game. Not mentioning all the RPO and pick plays which are really tough for the man d

Dan has beat up on terrible teams. Let's not start comparing him to Saban.

Don't know because Mullen's never had top to bottom 5* talent and the expectations that go with it. Simply being able to manage a roster full of 5* egos brings a different set of challenges.

As many others have said, there's a whole lot more to being a winning coach than game day Xs and Os.

Quite a few coaches over the years have been highly successful at the FBS or G5 level but couldn't translate that success to the next step up. Jim Donnan, for example, made 4 trips in 5 years to the FCS title game (winning one) with Marshall immediately prior to getting the Georgia job but only could average 8-4 with just one 10 win season in 5 years at UGA.

I'm not saying Mullen couldn't do it. There's simply no way to know until he gets the chance.

Are we talking the same coach who went 6-7 last season? Mullen beats LSU once by 30 and all of a sudden the Saban comparisons start.
