I don't have a link, although I could probably Google one. I'm on my phone, though, so I'll leave that for later.

Bad move, I think.

(Here's the best I can do for a link. My phone is glitchy on this site.)

So there's early signing periods for almost every other sport...but not one for football? What's the deal here?

Good move. The timing doesn't work for football (or fall sports in general). It wouldn't do any good for the vast majority of college football prospects.

Actually, ESPN would have made more money with two football signing days.

The issue was being contractually committed to a player in the late summer who could be injured in high school in the fall.

Early signing periods force a staff's hand because of the gamble it-all evokes.

It would be a terrible time without early official visits, and even then it is not a good thing.

- When you fire a coaching staff, the recruits will already be signed by other schools so you are stuck with garbage level talent to fill a class for the most part.

When McElwain was hired at Florida, how of the kids he signed in Feb. would have already been signed with another school?

A NSD right at the start of bowl season? Why? Not a good time.

Kids are just getting done with a semester of high school in the middle of December and schools will need to know if they can get admitted to college or if they still need more work.

Plenty of other examples to give.

Timing just doesn't work.

For a sport like basketball you are talking about 1, 2, or 3 kids, not 20, or 25, or 30.

Also, an early signing period is actually being pushed by the smaller conferences to help avoid the bigger schools from poaching their commits in Dec. and Jan.

It wasn't rejected. The decision is deferred to next year, and it will pass then.

Thinks Saban is just fine the way it is. Plus he can't pull offers on signing day if they signed 6 mos ago.

What about the issue of coaching changes that occur after Dec 16? Kids are then obligated to different staffs, staffs are obligated to kids they may not want .... there will be a ton of issues.

So the issue is either do it 15 Aug or 15 Dec. That's what is going to be decided between now and next year.

Plus there will be wording issues regarding if the contracts are binding in the event of injuries and coaching changes.

It's all a slippery slope.

The ACC schools are really pushing this as much or more than anyone .... and that's not even taking into consideration the necessity for early camps, the academic issues, no test scores .... sheesh, there is a ton of stuff to iron-out.
