I believe, not sure, that it has always been a legit form of designation deep within the grimy, greasy, creek roach slurping, put some hot sauce on 'dat booger before you eat it, who dat vestiges of archaic human existence of the gumbo eaters of Cajun Country.
When you see it used here, it is just part of their decadent and rotten culture that is being propagated to civilized humans by sheer repetition here on SEC Rant, Tiger Rant, etc...
You could be right about how long it has been popular to use it on the SEC Rant though; I'm not sure about that. I would imagine it's been used forever on Tiger Rant; Cajuns are as thick as maggots on a dead horse over there.

Com'on, we all know "baw" is the pronunciation of "boy" used by obese southern sheriffs when talking down to someone (see Sherriff Buford T. Justice character in "Smokey and the Bandit").

I have been called obstreperous, bawdy, and unruly in a single sentence since childhood. Bawdy was added in grade school when I discovered the female form and could also add wenching to my resume from my early youth.
The Irish were drinking, fighting, and fornicating long before the AA's, Cajuns, and LSU folks so get over yourself. When it comes to Louisiana I have family and friends there and they do the cookin and I bring the booze so chill out and just enjoy being human!

Years ago, I don’t know how long, some young fella thought it would be cool to use that term. He and a couple of others tried to push it and thought they had created it but it never caught on. I thought it was stupid, but kids will be kids.
That’s all I know about that.

Here's the thing, no one in Louisiana says it, it only exists on this site. The closest thing in real life is "boss" which is sometimes said lazily and sounds similar and "boy" which sounds very similar when said with an inner-city inflection.
