#44 is pretty good for State. I think we used to finish around #100. We'd finish even better if the point totals were divided by the number of participating sports.

I agree and that is what the SEC All-Sports Trophy does.

I meant a school's total points divided by the number of sports that particular school participates in. The SEC all-sports trophy gives points based on how many SEC schools participate.

State doesn't participate in as many sports as others, so getting 550 points in fewer sports would show an average finish better than many other schools. Florida would do well in that one, too.

Pretty dreadful year by A&M’s standards. I’m confident things to turn around by adding more points in football, basketball, and getting track & softball back on track.

We've been down in football, and deserve all the flack we get, but Arkansas is still a top 25 university natiowide.

Yes I see what you are saying, but if you are measuring the strongest athletic programs I think it should be a positive to have more sports. In other words if a school only had bowling and kicked arse in it, they would be at the top because they are #1 in 100% of their sports.

There should be a minimum number of sports and a limit on the number used. Maybe something like a minimum of 12 sports, so if you only play 11, then you get a 0 of the 12th. Then they take the top 12 finishes in all of your sports and take an average for your point total. That would seem to be more fair and allow others to compete better with Stanford.

I still say it should be based on sports the majority of schools actually participate in.

Just look at the spring sports...

Baseball
Softball
M Golf
W Golf
M Tennis
W Tennis
M T&F
W T&F

Pretty much everybody plays

As for other spring sports :: No teams = Bold / Not conference = Italic

M Lacrosse = (5) ACC / (6) B1G / (0) B12 / (0) SEC / (1) PAC //// ACC and B1G sport
W Lacrosse = (8) ACC / (7) B1G / (0) B12 / (2) SEC / (6) PAC //// ACC, B1G, and PAC sport
M Volleyball = (0) ACC / (2) B1G / (0) B12 / (0) SEC / (3) PAC //// B1G and PAC sport
W Water Polo = (0) ACC / (2) B1G / (0) B12 / (0) SEC / (5) PAC //// PAC sport
Beach Volleyball = (0) ACC / (1) B1G / (1) B12 / (3) SEC / (8) PAC //// PAC sport
W Rowing = (9) ACC / (8) B1G / ** (7) B12 / (0) SEC / (7) PAC

** 2 SEC schools row in the B12

PAC has a built in advantage as they are the only P5 with sports they can gain points in!!

Don't they field teams for almost every NCAA sanctioned sport? I don't know how their AD keeps tabs on all of them.

First in football trumps all since it is the only important sport. In fact, football recruiting is more important than any other actual sport.

I would argue that schools like Kentucky and Duke and a few other have built very solid athletic departments without putting football first. As a matter of fact Kentucky's basketball coach makes more than your football coach.

But I agree that football is the kang.

Men and women's golf and gymnastics really hit Alabama this year. Finished #13 in the 2017-18 standings.

Duke is a small wealthy private school

UK is a bit more interesting as they are keeping up with the really big schools in a state hampered by....

Small population
Less wealth
Less in state recruits
Heavy competition from bigger SEC schools
Lack of corporate HQ's in the CKY area
Competition for these limited assets with a P5 in state (UL)

Meh, arky does good at the Olympic sports. U know and I know nobody gives a shite about track, volleyball or golf. Hell, even the CWS was outdone in viewers by the bachelor tv show.

U know what the only 2 major sports are. How u doing in those?
