Now that the Genie is out of the bottle, you have to wonder.

Will this happen to every program ?

Are the players making more than the coach ?

Good question. The real question is if you get good guys in the portal and commit a lot of money to them and then they don’t pan out… what can you do about it?

Yes, you can cut them but that doesn’t undue the financial commitment of NIL. What are the repercussions of NIL deals not panning out on the field?

NIL hurts all programs who were built on brand, reputation and history unless you happen to be one of those schools with that plus boat loads of cash.

It also exposed how desperate they need to win because without sports they remember they live in a swamp

It didn’t affect them too much the last 2-3 years.

NIL is gonna spread out more talent across all sports. Its going to be harder to do a dynasty regardless unless its a smaller tier 2/3 sport.

Wait what? Since NIL, LSU baseball has more national championship trophies than any other program.

Hell no. This year if any proves how essential NIL and the transfer portal is for Jay Johnson. JJ is 45-40 in the SEC at LSU. He has won two natties and one was purely because of deep LSU NIL pockets with Paul Skenes and Tommy White. JJ is not a good in game manager and technical coach, he needs deep pockets to win, which has tended to work for him

I think what NIL did harm is consistency, every national champ since ‘21 has suffered the following year.

I’ve wondered that, I tend to agree with a previous poster that programs built on tradition and brand will be hurt most across any sport. I will say I don’t think lsu baseball is a great temperature check with one bad season. I think the big ten(traditionally god awful in baseball) will be the best way to determine the impact of nil in baseball. If nd Mich osu and schools that don’t prioritize baseball but have sgit tons of money start being competitive in Omaha youll know nil changed the game.

This goes for every coach

I don’t expect you to watch every LSU game - Skenes and Tanks were big parts of that team, sure, but to say they were the only reason for the NC is inaccurate. Dylan Crews won the Golden Spikes in ‘23. Further, Skenes’ NIL money was well below what other players around the league were making.

Inaccurate. Jay put on a master class in the 2025 season. Every decision he made seemed to work out. The same can be said for his 2023 postseason.
