Yep, they were a tiny fish prior to him entering the fold. Politics and others ran him off and now they are reaping what they sow and having to go back to being small time.

Its why Duke despite their ultra low enrollment has the highest budget in CBB most years.

3 advantages Duke has with basketball.

1. Historic blue blood
2. Duke and UNC both care deeply about it
3. Bball is much cheaper than football.

However schools like Mich pour money in the portal it will he hard to compete with them

There are only 10-15 teams able to compete in the modern landscape and even thats largely dependent on which boosters have money at a given time.

It's more than 10-15, but it's less than the entire P4. Anyone sitting outside the B1G, SEC, and not named Notre Dame is in for a tough time if they are going to try to compete against the likes of Ohio State, Alabama, and Texas. A few of the programs in the B1G and SEC are probably on the bubble too: UCLA and Rutgers, for instance, have both struggled with big deficits and lack of athletic revenue.

I also think that the player pay bubble will burst and come back down to earth slightly. But we're going through the growing pains of the pay to play era, and some of these programs who are tremendously over-spending (Colorado, Louisville, somehow Rutgers despite getting all the B1G money, etc.) are probably going to set themselves back for decades with deficits in the meantime.

Louisville athletic dept might be broke, but the basketball team is throwing out insane money for 26-27 roster They will clearly have one of the highest paid rosters next year.

I think many schools will start to focus on one sport moving forward.

How do you think LSU will look this year? LSU AD Ausberry says to expect a $25-35 million dollar deficit at LSU.

quote:

LSU Athletic Director Verge Ausberry warned of a looming $25 to 35 million athletic department deficit. This financial shortfall is primarily driven by the introduction of athlete revenue-sharing models and the massive $54 million buyout resulting from the firing of former football coach Brian Kelly

IF that comes to pass, it's a one-time thing. We had a lot of expenses hit at the same time, including buyouts, new contracts, and our rolled over revenue share. I believe Ole Miss did the same, so they would be in the same boat or worse.

After this season LSU athletics will likely go back to just breaking even or only losing a few million dollars per year like normal.

What does it feel like trolling someone because their athletic department lost $5 million only to realize your own AD has told fans to buckle up and expect losses six to seven times more than that?

You are a grade-A moron. LSU has historically been one of the most consistently profitable AD's in the country

Even spending a ton in the portal last year, firing coaches, and hiring new ones, we STILL ended up with a 4 million surplus.

LSU not only had to pay $54 million to Brian Kelly and $6 million to Scott Woodward, they had to pay Ole Miss $3 million to cover Kiffin’s buy out.

quote:

LSU agreed to pay a $3 million buyout to Ole Miss to release Lane Kiffin from his contract. The buyout was part of a landmark $91 million deal that brought Kiffin to Baton Rouge.

No they aren’t. Here is a list of 20 who were more profitable. This is an incomplete list of schools in no order that were more profitable than LSU in 2024.

Ohio State: $26 million
Georgia: $34 million
Alabama: $19 million
Texas A&M: $16 million
Florida: $16 million
Penn State: $11 million
Texas: $14 million
Michigan: $17 million
Auburn: $23 million
Indiana: $34 million
Virginia: $11 million
Florida State: $11 million
Michigan State: $16 million
Clemson: $15 million
Oregon: $13 million
Illinois: $15 million
Nebraska: $12 million
Missouri: $16 million
Arkansas: $8 million
Purdue: $22 million

LSU: $7 million

LSU isn’t even one of the most profitable SEC schools. Yes, you are top ten in revenues. But you are also top ten in expenses. LSU is certainly not frugal. That LSU is one of the most profitable athletic departments is a fairytale just like the one that says LSU baseball is always profitable.

I didn't say they were the most profitable. I said they were one of the most consistently profitable, meaning they always or almost always turn a profit, excluding COVID. That was in response to your stupid and ill informed post that we were about to "go back to normal" by "breaking even or losing a few million every year".

You have no idea what you're talking about and don't seem intelligent enough to even research your points properly before speaking. Move along.

So in summary:

You tried to dunk on Ole Miss for losing $5 million.

You didn’t realize LSU is about to make that look like pocket change.

You said something incorrect that was easily verifiable and got called on it.

You got mad.

Donor fatigue will set in soon at most places. It's ok to chunk millions to win some games in the short-term but long-term the money folks will not be so willing to continue to sink funds into a financial hole of which there is no return on investment

I’m surprised this isn’t happening already. Truthfully, as much as I want LSU to win, I have no interest in donating for these guys to be treated like professional athletes. I’ll to games and I’ll buy shirts, hats, jerseys, etc but beyond that I’m out.

I’m not knocking anyone who does, but it just doesn’t interest me.
