Dabo on fumble out of end zone call: Kid should have held on to the ball

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney: "Give K'Von Wallace some credit, you know? ... That's what the heart of a champion looks like right there. He's giving all he's got and he goes and knocks the ball loose and creates a situation. So, you know, it's a bang-bang play, and if you're on that side of it, a very tough call ... I thought it was going to be hard to overturn. And if they'd called it the other way it would've probably been hard to overturn. But, like I said, I'm just proud of my guy for busting his butt and getting over there and knocking it loose."
"I've had some of them go against me, too. I've had good and bad. You live long enough, they'll even out. Tough call, certainly a tough call. Tough break, but hey, at the end of the day, if the kid hangs on to the ball, you ain't got a problem."

Amen. A&M didn't get the 2 point conversion when it mattered

I mean, A&M got the ball back and scored. It didn't end up being that huge a deal. Sure if they'd scored there and don't get 2 it's more time to see the ball back for a FG, but ultimately it didn't change the outcome that much.
It's impossible to overturn and the ref had a terrible angle, depth wise, to make the call. It was just a bad break.

literally on one really cares about the actual end result of the play. its the rule itself that is getting shat on

He's totally right, but that doesn't make the rule any less stupid.

Except that, if A&M would have scored then. And then stopped Clemson’s next possession, which they did. Their last score, FG or TD would have won the game.

I wonder if he’s talking about the on-side kick in championship game that Bama caught. Perfectly executed play, but Dabo had a conniption fit on the side line. I was embarrassed for him.

One thing that’s pretty annoying is that the 2 closest refs ruled it OOB at the 1. If you watch the replay a 3rd ref runs in from offscreen and overrules the 2 closer refs so the call on the field was a touchback.

Sure, maybe. But you can't just assume it goes that way. Clemson probably approaches things differently up 2 as opposed to up 8. I'm guessing they don't go QB power 2 straight times and punt.
I'm not saying it didn't hurt, but it's just a bad break

Yeah that call, in the context when it happened, was a MASSIVE deal actually. A&M got the ball back and scored, but scoring with 3 mins left and 2 timeouts and needing a 2 pt conversion to tie is massively different than scoring with 45 seconds left, no timeouts, and needing the two. They could have potentially gotten another possession after scoring in the former scenario.
At the end of the day, A&M just missed a few too many opportunities to win that game. They arguably played better than Clemson, or at least played to a draw in terms of quality. But that atrocious call should not be underestimated when evaluating how that game could have ended. It was a TERRIBLE call, clearly the ball did not go out of the end zone. Absolutely horrendous call on the field (ACC refs), and then it was totally spineless and inept not to overturn it in the review booth (I think it was an SEC crew in the review room, but I'm not positive).
I think these big home and home series should probably just be officiated by neutral crews, like the neutral site games. Too much vested interest now with the playoff and money going to the conferences for their teams making the playoff.

Agreed.

Ultimately, the pylon cam is the best angle and it looked like it was the correct call, anyway

I still remember the ball rolling through the back of the end zone for 20yds in 2010 on Ingram’s fumble. Completely changed the outcome of that game. I hated the rule but that’s the rule and has been. That said aTm got the ball back and scored and failed to convert two point conversion. Did not like the call on the goal line. I hate roll outs on a short field. It’s too easy for the defense to defend when you cut the field in half and are playing from the two or three yard line.

Ha! So I guess now coaches are gonna stop telling the runner to stretch out for the pile-on??? Oy vey...
Refs should have called it at the 1, and then had the review.
This is a rule that I dont think many coaches teach about, so a player needs to know the repercussions of doing it.
I only know about it from a loss to bama a decade ago. I remember getting excited when it happened during the UT/aggie game. Al the fans around me were looking at me like i'm crazy with "why he so excited about??". Then it turned to the "wait what just happened, and why does UT have the ball?!?!" boooooos. Ha. Took the game to OT at least.

Dabo’s Credo:
Why use 10 words when you can use 10,000?
Why use 10 words when you can use 10,000?

Sorry Dabo but that ball went out of bounds. Most bullshite call of the season.

He's right.
I can't stand the way players now hold out the ball only to fumble it. They put in a rule that a player had to hold on to a catch through the event of hitting the ground a few years ago.
I wish they would do the same for these pylon TD's. You have to control the ball when hitting the ground on a "stretching for the goal line" TD.

He's right. he never should have stretched the ball out. I understand why he did it, but it was the wrong thing to do in that situation. It almost crushed the kid.
Had a similar thing happen to Florida against us a few years ago. Tough break.
