Why are all the Bammers bringing up LSU in a topic about Southern Miss and Alabama?

Fun fact: Our longest win streak vs Southern Miss (11), matches our longest win streak vs LSU.

When USM was in the Metro with Florida State, South Carolina, Louisville, et. al, they were in a major conference and recruited well.

From 1988-1990, Southern Miss beat Florida State, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech.

Even as late as 1996, Southern Miss had a schedule that had Alabama, Florida, Illinois and Tennessee and went 9-3.

Conference expansion killed Southern Miss as a decent program. They were left out in three conference expansions that they had a chance to move in. Now, they aren't even on the radar.

Bama had to forfeit the 93 game because a player signed a contract with an agent negating his eligibility, then lied about it and their compliance people ignored the agent when he presented evidence, and allowed him to play an entire season before admitting their mistake.

It's honestly kinda sad to see what has become of USM in the last decade. They were a really solid program for the better part of 20-30 years. And then poof, they went from 12-2 to 0-12 overnight in the Ellis Johnson year and have never really recovered from it. That, plus they've really struggled to recruit in recent years with the rise of some of the other Sun Belt and C-USA directional schools.

Meh. Not really. They win 1 time out of 8 or 9 attempts. Not really an issue.

Well, they beat Ole Miss so many times that the Rebels won't play them anymore.

Southern Miss used to be the thorn in the side of a lot of SEC teams. They beat Alabama, Auburn, and UGA in the 1990s. Others too, maybe, but those are the ones I know.

Brett Favre will do that.

18-6 record. Really intimidating

Southern won 5 of the last 7 meetings and 4 of the last 5 before Ole Miss got skeered.

Wasn't just Favre. USM of the 90s and early 2000s played defense at the same level as the best teams in the SEC. They were nasty.

Their problem was they couldn't score. Almost of their games vs good SEC teams/FSU/Nebraska ended 20-10 or 17-13 or something like that.

Even more amazing is that back in the day USM had as large or a larger enrollment than Ole Miss or MSU. Now it isn't even close to the size of the other two schools.

Yes he did and went in their locker room after the game to congratulate him and his team mates. Coach Bryant was a class act.

More surprised they’ve played that many times???????

35-6-2..
Bama has played So Miss more than OU, Texas, TexAM, and Mizzou combined..

Was southern miss a yearly rival at some point?

Pretty sure Bobby Collins routinely beat Ole Miss and Mississippi State when he was at Southern Miss.

As recently as 2011 they finished #19 in the final AP poll.

It has not been a kind decade for them since.

Growing up, USM was always considered a tougher game on the schedule than a Vandy or Kentucky.
