There's a home renovation show based in some small Mississippi town that I've watched a few times and its incredible what they can do with $200k. The houses are damn near free.

That being said, there's no way in hell I'd ever move to Laurel, Mississippi.

I'd have a beer with Ben

course, metro atlanta is like 30 counties by some accounts

Yea, you'd have to take the broadest "Metro Atlanta" to get to that.

Alabama has 5,024,279 people

Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb, DeKalb, Clayton, Cherokee, Forsyth and Henry Counties have 4,610,513. If you added Douglas, Rockdale and Fayette (the ARC Metro) it'd be 4,967,514

I honestly think it has been a good thing here, for the most part. A lot of the state government's best accomplishments the last 30 years have been due to outside the box thinking by collections of people across the political and regional spectrum because they basically have to. And while not always pretty or smooth, they generally find ways to fix things that have to be fixed.

Local governments are usually run much better and actually address the need of their people mainly because they don’t get paid much of anything. They all have regular jobs too and their constituents’ issues are also their issues, unlike the career politicians in Washington that only live in their districts a few months out of the year. Local politicians (outside the mayors in big cities) are generally doing the jobs because they care a whilr lot more. They also get things done you can actually see and things that have an impact on your day to day life. They live up to campaign promises more too and don’t just make empty promises to get your vote, because if they don’t, they see those people who voted for them every day and still have to do business with them in the community. That’s not to say there aren’t corrupt people in local government but it’s not nearly as bad

Laurel used to be a really nice town. It declined tremendously over the course of 40 years, but I think leadership has woken up. It’s still got a ways to go, but is trending in the right direction.

When I moved to that area in 1989 the total population for Columbia was around 60,000ish.

I don’t claim to be a genius but, those states towards the bottom aren’t liberal states.

No way a person left Mississippi because of liberals lol

Those are only SEC states. Looks at the states like Cali and NY that either had a negative growth or slower growth than normal.

Libs moving to the cheaper states is kinda like how the Europeans colonized the world back in the day. It's not because their countries are bad, they just want more of everything. That's where the redneck states of the SEC come in.

Texas is purple...Georgia is purple (not yet consistent blue).

Libs coming from the north, illegals coming from the border. No wonder you rednecks are angry all the time

There’s more for sale than you think but many rural MS towns don’t list nicer houses publicly.

You gotta know a local and be of a certain demographic. They try to keep certain neighborhoods a certain way if you catch my drift

I do. Lots of rentals in my old Alabama hometown but not very many listed on a website. You better hope your new boss who just hired you gets you in touch with one of the many fine people who are willing to rent to the discerning tenant.

Our strategy continues to work perfectly. MS is the best place in the country to live but we have successfully fooled people into thinking that we are still a terrible place to live.

So please do not move here. It is still bad. You would not want live here.

A lot of the “shittiest places to live in the United States” are actually pretty good if you just have some capital in hand.

Mississippi has had 50 democratic governors and 7 Republican governors in its state history...

It's more fair to ask why states like Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, etc. offer superior financial prosperity for middle class families opposed to states like Cali, NY, NJ, Massachusetts, etc.

There’s also this thing called party realignment in the 1960s.

And since 1960, Mississippi has elected 9 democratic governors and 4 Republican governors...

Texas is going to eventually be the land of transplanted California socialists and hispanics. Any of you conservative cowboy types will have to move or adapt.

Yeah, I had to move for my sanity and I am happy with the decision.

My family still has a ranch in Texas and we will never sell it. It's killed me watching the hill country ranches get cut up into fricking "ranchettes" the last 15 years.

I'm looking for a couple hundred acres with water in Southern Tennessee & North Alabama right now.

It's something I don't understand. You run from a place because you don't like what it has become, then proceed to vote for the same policies that turned it into the place you fled.

AND bitch about the way we do things and tell us how to change it.
