Can John Mateer make a Year 2 jump?

He wouldn't be the first transfer QB to be much better in his second year at his new school. Dillon Gabriel did it just three years ago.

I took a look at a few others, as Mateer hopes to have similar improvement:

He didn’t mention but Joe Burrow improved greatly his second year at LSU

So many things should be better:

- Recovered from his injury. Prior to that he looked like a bonafide Heisman candidate

- Experienced OLine

- Same OC

- New improved TE coach

- Stability in program familiarity

- Improved WR & TE & RB rooms

Almost everything is improved. Should be a fun year

He will be serviceable I fear. That isn't horrible.

Arkansas fans rioted when I brought up that Drake Lindsey, whose family is Arkansas football, wound up going to Minnesota and winning 8 games last year. "He's mediocre!" they screamed.

A mediocre, game manager QB at Arkansas probably had us at 6-6 and in a bowl game last year.

Maybe Mateer will show a big jump, but I suspect he'll be average. Not a bad thing. Don't lean on him to win games and don't put him in a position to fail and Oklahoma has a good shot at the playoffs. Once you're in CFP all bets are off.

It might enrage some Alabama fans but they've won a few national titles with "just don't f*ck up" QBs who could matriculate the ball down the field and avoid mistakes.

This tries to make out like this is his second year when its actually his fourth year.

The X-factor for him is how much did that injury really derail his season.

This place is sharpening its pitchfork.

Didn't Mateer get hurt this past year?

If he plays anything like he did vs Bama OU will be a great team this year he had one horrible pick … he was much improved in the playoffs

SEC officials found a way to help him improve his TD numbers last year.

Excellent hire. I have become really impressed with the Venables.

Wow, flashbacks to last year and threads like this about Garrett Nussmeier and Lanorris Sellers.

He's different than most cases because his OC came with him. No reason for him to need 2 years. He's a mediocre gunslinger.

Joe's different and shouldn't be brought up with these below average QBs.

Always count on dalton for bringing up LSU. Dude probably has at least one LSU sticker on his truck.

Umm this is precisely why the op brought up the fact his first year was just like or worse than John Mateers with an injured hand ….. no one including you knew how good he would be ….

People point to his play going downhill following his thumb/hand injury, but his bottom half / legs are a disaster when setting his feet to throw - and his thumb injury shouldn't have had any effect on his legs.

It's fixable obviously, but he needs to fix his mechanics from the waste down otherwise he will continue to really struggle.

He most likely is what he is at this point, which isn't bad if he's healthy, but isn't great either.

I expect him to, yes. He has played a ton of football and is very experienced. He now has a year of SEC play under his belt too. A lot will depend on if OU can find a few playmakers for him. Another thing is SEC teams really limited his running this season. That was a major part of his game at Wazzou, but the LBs he is facing in this conference are much more athletic than Wazzou's opponents. Maybe OU can scheme some designed runs for him which could open up some passing lanes.
